Looking to buy 2032r/2038r, MMM question

Hey all, new to the forum. I'm looking to purchase a 2032r or 2038r (that part is undecided). I have been reading the forums and I'm seeing a lot of complaints regarding the command cut functionality. Is it possible to do a mmm on these machines without the command cut?

I understand that I'd probably be better off going without the MMM option altogether and getting a separate machine for mowing, but I'd like to have a single piece of equipment on this particular property due to limited storage.

I believe JD does offer a non-Command Cut version for the 2 series, but only on the 72" deck. If memory serves, the 60D is only available with Command Cut. The other downside of the 60D is that they do not offer an OEM option for Load-N-Go (although one is available on the 72D). I bought a 2032R with a 60D earlier this year and while I love it, I do wish I'd gotten the 72D for the extra mowing width and the Load-N-Go. Good luck!

According to JD Parts, the only MMM lift mechanism offered is Command Cut..

Jgayman is right, command cut is the only option. I have it, haven't had any issues, but I wouldn't buy it today knowing about the issues that have come up.

Looks like I'll do the 2038r and just buy an x738 for the lawn next year.

Get a 72" finish mower to run off the rear PTO.

I don't have a nickel in this, but you couldn't give me a MMM for a large frame 2-Series.

Count Chuckula is correct. He covered all.

I have a 2038R with 60D. My Command-cut works just fine, with no problems. I enjoy mowing with my tractor.

But, if I had a chance to buy it over, I would go with a Zero turn instead. Much faster.

If you decided to buy a 32/38 tractor with MMM, go with the 72D due to the load-N-go brackets.

Just to weigh in with an alternative point of view, I absolutely love mowing with the 72D MMM on my 2038R. I have 5+ acres that I keep mowed, much of it very bumpy, and am able to go much faster (in straight lines anyway) on my 2038R than I would on any zero turn.

I absolutely prefer mowing on my ZTR, but it is a handy option for the Mrs. and/or boys to help me out with some of the wide-open spaces. Definitely wouldn't want it as my primary machine.

I was in the same boat, I personally only wanted one machine. I bought the 2038r with a 72” mmm, this has been a serious upgrade from a 3025e and rear finish mower. If you have a lot of trees and landscaping to mow around the rear finish mower is cumbersome. The 72” mmm cuts grass really well, and I haven’t had any issues with the command cut. I like how the tractor sits up higher than a zero turn, so if it’s windy I’m not eating clippings. The deck comes off in a couple minutes and the pto pins up high for rear pto or loader work.

Wide open spaces are where a RFM (rear finish mower) shines.

The positive in getting the mmm is the option to get the tkv20 later on. Mine is a 2017 and I have yet to have an issue with the command cut and 200 hours mowing. Load n go is a must with 72d

I'm throwing my 2 cents in here. I bought a 2018 2032R that came with a 60D which worked well, but I always planned to swap out the 60D for the 72D. I put a 72D under it two days after I got it. I had a 72" deck on my 955 and loved it. To me it doesn't make much sense to use 32-38 HP on a 60" deck. Having ran both on three different tractors, I also agree the the 72" deck makes mowing way quicker and easier, IF it will fit where you need it to go.

As to the actuator, I believe there are 5 things you can do to avoid issues with the command cut system. This is what I do.
1. Don't hit anything torquing the deck clockwise or counter clockwise.
2. Don't let the deck ride on the anti-scalp wheels
3. Be sure to set the anti-scalp wheels in the correct position per the label.
4. Do everything you can to keep the actuator from getting wet.
5. If you cut square corners like most do(me), lift the deck before turning, and backing up.
Yes the first actuators were flawed, probably even some of the second version. Since I own one, I've read every thread, and comments about the command cut. IMO it's about 50/50 whether the actuator was just jammed or had faulty position sensors.

Does Deere have an issue? Yep. Did they try to head off the issue by having an updated/different actuator? Yep. Even been told there might be a 3rd version coming out, haven't seen a part number yet. Can anyone explain why several members have gone thru two or even three of them, while several others have hundreds of hrs without an issue. I can't. Is Deere standing behind owners with issues like they should? IMHO, no. Not when the part is 1200.00 or more at times. If you are getting a MMM w/command cut an extended warranty is an absolute must, I did my homework and added the warranty when I got mine, plus it covers A LOT more than just the command cut issues for the life of the loan, and is transferable, if selling later.

What I can say is that I have ran just about every lift system Deere has ever made from pulling on a long handle, pushing on a pedal, moving a lever, pushing a button, and holding a switch, and I'm sticking with the command cut, even knowing I could get bent over a rail post warranty. There is a learning curve using it. Knowing what, and when it can do something, and when it can't.

Command Cut with a MMM on a 32/38R is a pure joy to use, for me, and I'm sure others. Just protect yourself with the extended warranty.

My 2 cents.

Allen.

X2! And a GREAT point. Have the same set-up, 2018 though, pushing 200 hrs. A 32/38R, TKV20, with a 72D is really an amazing mowing set up.

Mine in a 2017 as well and around 200 hours of mowing with the 72” deck as well. I have had no issues with it but I always hate posting that because I am tempting fate.

I really like using the command cut and hope it keeps working well. I do different heights and being able to turn the dial and simply move it is handy. As mentioned above using the TKV 20 Is a game changer as well.

I have a 2038 with a 72" command cut mower. I have had 1 problem after my son hit something hard enough to bend the mower deck into the blade. I heard the racket from the garage and he came to the garage and we took the mower off and it was pushed in in the center of the back of the deck. We picked it up with the load and go's and with a hand sledge we pounded it out. Put the deck back on and and it would not raise it all the way up. it would stop around 5. it would mow just not raise all the way up. Called the dealer on Monday and they picked it up Wednesday and found it was just out of adjustment. Got it back Friday. Mowed three times since and it works great.

If I had the option to repurchase, I would again. The only thing I would change is in getting the r3+ galaxy radials (which was not available at the time). No I don't have rear scvs, but I have no use for them either. And as far as 3rd function which I don't have, my pallet forks have taken care of whatever I needed. Everything else has saved me time, backaches, frustraction, cussing, etc while also saving my marriage (LOL). But, I also notice I take on alot more projects because I have the ability to and on my time schedule, which saves money. And I only have 2 acres. It is an expensive addiction. Once you get a tractor, you never want to live without one.

And as Herminator said, TKV20 is a GAME CHANGER.

I second the R3 radial tires. The only downside that I found when I started running the mmm on the 2038r, is the pto will shut off in reverse. Thankfully this was an easy fix via YouTube video on changing the settings in the computer, so now the mower doesn’t shut off.

You assume everyone who reads your entry knows what "MMM" and "command cut" refers to . How about a little explanation so all of us can learn something?????
