A week ago I went to now my lawn. Got the tractor started and noticed my tires needed air. Shut the tractor off and then the fusible link went up in smoke. Not sure what could have happened since its been working fine for months now. Where do I start? Have the wiring diagram and the PDF that shows how to check the voltage regulator but I'm lost on the wiring. Tractor is a LT155 with 15hp Kohler, 3 position key and a 15a charging system.

Thanks! Tried another forum but most of those folks thought the red diode was the voltage regulator.

Speaking of which, before the link blew the tractor would only turn over with the diode bypassed. A brand new one didn't fix that problem either. Here is what the diode looks like:

Update. Just checked the voltage regulator andfrom ground to 2 pins I get 43k ohms on the b and c pins and nothing on the d pin.

Did some more poking around. Red wire on the VR looks melted. It also melted the connector together. Cut the red Eire and associated black wire from VR harness and put blade connectors on. With the red wire disconnected the battery doesn't spark at me when I hook up the + lead using a jumper cable. With the red wire connected it sparks at me and the 15a fuse I put in place of the fusible link doesn't blow. Does that sound like the VR is dead? I still got weird ohm readings with it completely taken off the tractor.

I have the same mower. I'll try to check my VR and post back later on tonight.

Here's what my VR checks from pin to pin. This is with the stator connector unplugged.

A to B = 8 meg ohms

A to C = 8.5 meg ohms

A to D = 31 meg ohms

B to C = 0.2 ohms

B to D = 8 meg ohms

C to D = 8 meg ohms

Sounds like the VR is dead. It's shorted or was shorted to ground when it failed, and might have cleared the fault. That's why it probably wouldn't turn over.

If it starts now, it's probably just running off the battery and not charging. Watch for charging voltage when it's running or replace the VR anyway. They do fail.

Just going to replace the VR. Engine runs much smoother with it disconnected. Lost my mower deck belt yesterday too so need to get one of those too. My local JD dealer actually has good prices on parts and is generally on par with internet prices or cheaper. Thanks for all the help!
