LX172?

I purchased my lawn tractor recently from a local guy who repairs and resells them. It's a Craftsman LT2000 with a 54" deck and grass catcher, but that's not the reason for this thread.

I have a significantly steep and long driveway and after replacing the drive belts (tractor wouldn't go up the driveway) he mentioned that they're currently working on a LX172. He was bringing it up to me because it's gear driven and...it's a Deere (to go with my 1025R). Sounds like the engine is blown so they'll be installing a v-twin in its place.

It would have a Deere 38" deck on it (don't know if he has a grass catcher for it).

Yes, I know it's used, and would have a transplanted motor. He was really emphasizing the quality of this model "this isn't one of those big box models, it's one you have to get from Deere and you have to go to them for the parts too."

It would be a straight trade for what I have currently. I know there are no pictures for this thread, but would it be tempting to you? Any known issues with that model? Thanks!

An Lx172 was a good tractor. Would I want one now? No. Front axles are an oddity if worn, so a lot of play or it not sitting perpendicular to the ground is bad. Wiring is getting brittle and it's odd to find one w/o a busted hood. The decks were one of the best 38" deck made. You will have to be the judge when you see what you've got. If you find an exceptional one- possibly...

As mentioned, the LX172 was a good lawn tractor. I would say great myself. The LX line was the best you could get in lawn tractors back in the '90s. Kasawaki engines, durable frames, sturdy lawn tractor transmissions, great decks. Downside was the plastic hood. A LX172 would have a 14 hp single cylinder Kasawaki air cooled engine. So a twin cylinder might be pushing the limits of the space underneath the hood.

The Peerless 801 isn't the strongest transaxle either. Big hills will trash it. I have 2 LX173's (same trans) 1 with a bad transaxle (bought for parts) and the other one is getting so sloppy that I'm amazed it's still working.

Sounds good. They're going to swap in a v-twin heart transplant and are on the lookout for a replacement hood. Reading later in the thread I wonder if that v-twin would overpower the suspect transaxle. Might be a case of more power = more problems.

Imho, definitely look for a lawn tractor that suits your need that is a generation or two newer.

It's not how much HP you have, it's how you use it. LX transaxles, gear and hydro alike were built for flat-ish terrain. More HP + hills= faster broken stuff.
