I my neverending quest for a larger tractor

No brains
No emission

I've stumbled into a Barn find "57" TO35

New rear tires
new battery
FEL
pto
3 point

No 4x4 but I can get into it for 700... The tractor as is where is.
Needs towed = 200
one rear is flat = 200

No sign of life with new battery...something is jimmy'd

Gas tank stinks..no curl cylinders its a manual trip No power steering.

Old boy bought a 3032 to get around easier...... they sold it today for 12k with 92 hours on it.

Its an estate with both Boys living many miles away.

Gotta pull the trigger tomorrow if I'm gonna.

It has been in the barn all its life but not run in at least 6.

Has oil ,& antifreeze...looks decent.

Is it worth screwing with?
Perhaps trading stock to get what I want.

Did buy a never used Frontier DH 1066 disk for 600....was supposed to be 400 but 3 of us showed up so the bidding began.

Kinda queer but whatever..I was there an hour early..There was no hint of auction in the ad. It could have been worse.

I think the guy did well on the 3032 for 12k...it was nice but no quick attatch loader. Loader was a 300x iirc

Theres a couple old horse drawn sickle mowers for 50 bux a piece.....one has somesort of gear box the other dosn't??

If you can get it to be 4WD for $700 - that just seems too cheap.

The other things that would bother me are no power steering and no bucket curl. Add that to the $700 for 4WD (which would be a must for me but not others) it may make the price too much.

I don't follow the prices of older tractors. It seems like a good heavy unit but to get it to where you want might get pretty expensive.

Its NOT a 4x4......price they are thinking as of an hour ago is 700...as is where is. I was hoping for 500

Wanted a grand this morning.

They screwed up there estate sale ad and only 3 of us showed up.

I guess the "new" homeowner is thinking about it but already has a Kubota.

They should have left it in the barn but pulled it out yesterday and have no way of dealing with it or moving it now that the JD is gone.
With the flat rear and loader sitting on the ground ..its planted.

I need somthing to move logs...this could get me by with a big ole chunk of ballast..Rears have fluid as well.

Its not going make any trips down the Hill though.

Alright guys...

Its Friday night..I gotta give an answer by morning.

Whats it take to make a TO35 run?

I'm thinking there decent...see lots of them doing hay chores around here lately.

Surely a bunch of ya'll are in my age group ( well seasoned 50's) and put many hours on a massey 35....I never did.

Most of me is thinking that...seeing them from 800 to 5000

I'm outta work for a bit...If I can use it for a bit and flip it in the spring. Its something to do.

I like old and simple....sometimes the simple isn't so easy.

:munch::dunno:i could go both ways for it. back when i bought my jd model 50 i paid $800 for it sitting in a field with both pony tires flat, no battery. but it had a loader with it-old i mean old-:laugh: had a snow plow with it, and 3 different sized chains also.

no one had portable air compressors back then, i did have a air tank i took along--asked my dad's friend if he would haul it to my place on his trailer he used to haul his back hoe. said sure-so one afternoon we set off after it. put new points, plugs in it. a couple gallons of gas, needed some antifreeze too. pulled it with the dump truck 5 feet and it took off. my battery i took that i thought was a-ok was not:banghead: thats why it had to be pulled. my uncle bought his trailer plow for $75, dad's friend bought his brush hog for $400, the ole farmer throwed in a one section harrow:laugh:
till we got everything loaded with one pony tire on, took the other one off, it was late in the day, but i was tickled pink to get it..had looked a long time till i found it. it had no power steering, had a trip bucket on it, i got a lot of work out of it, over the yrs.

so if u can get even get them down to say $600 or 650--i would say GO FOR IT:lol:

its got a week old New battery in it.

Tank smells horrible but I could likely undo the intake/air filter and get some gas or starting fluid in it.

Problem is.....They think the ignition switch is broke.

No click...no power to nothing.

Its a 57...the year of transition from positive ground to Negitive.

I quizzed them on that...said they put in new battery just like the old.

They had run the tractor years & years ago and grew up with it...in the same breath ,Neither of them know the right end of a cresent wrench.
The one brother had drove it just before the dad bought the JD. It likely has not moved since .


So its not getting power....I did not raise the hood and did not realize it actually tipped up till some research later today.

Going to call in the morning and see whats up. Its only a few miles down the road so not a total day wrecker to take a more indepth look. I at least need to grab the fan and be sure its not stuck.

oil looks good both in motor and trans. Antifreze is iffy but tasted right:cheers:

No sign of oil in it..............................^^^^^^...................

yea or nay......its only :gizmo:

IMHO, if I could use it and get it for 700 bucks, I'd buy it. But that's me. Simple electrical and mechanical stuff I can fix. I bought a Ford model 8n about twenty years ago for 2200. It had a trip bucket, two sets of harrows, a single furrow plow, a drag blade, and it needed a battery. I bought the battery and it ran, but the brakes were kind of iffy. It gave me quite a few years of service before trading it. How hard is it to get parts for? That would be the deciding factor..............Good Luck

I don’t know how handy you are with mechanical things but that seems like a decent price even for a non runner with a loader. Those old tractors are pretty simple to work on especially with access to forums and lots of knowledge online available. If you have some fabrication skills adding a curl to the loader shouldn’t be too difficult. If you have a jump pack you can try cranking it over bypassing all the ignition and starter switch. I do that all the time with my hand crank Farmall Cub to start it up. You should probably expect to have to do some maintenance and fluid/filter changes but you’ll probably do that with any old tractor you buy. Good tires that match are worth most of their asking price.

Yes..I'm fairly handy.

Been into Motorcycles ,Jeeps,my old and still daily driven Ford.

Been down the 9n road and Dad had a 8 that was a real work horse...Hay dutys and weekly lawn mower with a flail mower.

Good call on jump pack...I think I could just use their new battery and a jumper cable to starter to see if it will spin.

Hydraulics are odd on loader.

2 levers..one is up the other down as owner dude recalls. They sit on floor in front of seat. Look like Briggs & stratten throtles..Short little guys.

Has no front pump or pto mounted pump.
Internet says loader should be slow as a snail with 4.5 gpm factory pump.
Owner seems to remember it working at a decent pace but with no power steering slow may be fast enough.

Apparently hydraulics don't hold loader up in some fashion as he recalls.....mysery.

One Brother is a Medford ,OR resident.( its a "thing")...Hipster dope smoker type from years past. All good just goofy.
Other is from Sacramento...older and less in touch. Basicly useless for info.

So how does the story end? Did you get it? If you did, I for one look forward to pictures of the restoration.

I wouldn't mind one of those sickle mowers. They look like like a good little restoration project.

I don't know if you bought it but if it would have been near me I would have jumped all over it.

I have a 57 Oliver super 55 which is about the same size and Hp as the MF 35 and I absolutely love it. I use it for task I won't even think of taking my JDs into. Their simplicity is their biggest attribute. The second is the weight and stability of the platform compared to a compact utility tractor. For bushing hogging the oliver gets that task every time. There are no sensors or wires to catch on brush and all the sudden cause a complete shutdown of the tractor. In this situation the saying "they don't build them like they used" fully applies.

An electrical problem should be pretty easy to diagnose. Theres probably only about 3 circuits in the whole tractor. 1-starter solenoid, 2-light, 3-gauges. I screwdriver across the starter solenoid would give you a quick idea if the engine rolled. If nothing I would have went directly to check ground.

Well ....The new owner of property opted to buy it.

Could be a blessing in the end.

I really don't need another project but had the deal gone through it may have been fun to fiddle with.



I've found a couple other possible candidates........One is even green with a 6 cyl. diesel.
I'm pretty sure I'd be shot on site if this one showed up and its way out of budgit.
Does have a cab and even a jack hammer. FEL & BH.

the other is a typical 5 series from 97 ish which should be safe from brains and polution.
