Modifiing the Snow Plow-Added a Urethane Cutting Edge

I have been wanting to try this or a rubber edge for years, so I finally decided to just do it, of course I took the expensive way!

I bought the material through eBay from this company: http://www.universalurethane.com/ In particular I got a 6" tall, 72" wide and 1" thick piece http://www.universalurethane.com/Polyurethane_Urethane_Snow_Plow_Blade_Specifications.html

I first removed the steel edge and confirmed I could flip it upside down and still leave good clearance for the urethane edge to stick out 1" or so. Then I cut it to length (66") on the regular miter saw.

The material does not come drilled or slotted, so onto the mill it went. I am really starting to like this CNC thing:laugh:

Now it's just a matter of sandwiching the urethane between the moldboard and the steel cutting edge. I used 5/8"x3" Grade 8 bolts for this, TSC did not have any 5/8" plow bolts, only 1/2". I am going to run with the shoes all the way up for a while till it wears in a little.

Nice job Ken.

Was the steel tearing up your driveway? It will be interesting to see how long it will last.

Tearing up? No. Marking up? Yes. Plus it's a lot quieter than steel.

All the research I have done says they last a long time-I shall see if it ever snows.
Thanks for sharing this project with us and great pics. I really liked the job the TSC 3/4" thick stall mat edge did on my 54" blade. Keep us posted on how this does/wears for you.:thumbup1gif:
Why sandwich it with the old wear plate? Did it not conform to the blade?

I'll bet it's a bunch quieter than the steel grinding away. Nice job. Please give a review when you can. :D
Looks like a good idea....altho,I have never plowed snow.....we just dont get enough in Texas to warrant one. Is this edge made out of High density High Molecular Weight (HDHMW) poly? Supposed to be really slick and very durable.Let us know how it work....and we need pics:laugh:

This material does not have rigidity-it's like a wet noodle, so you have to sandwich it that way and only allow 1" stick out or it would just flop over under stress. You could also run the risk of the bolts just pulling through the mounting holes.

The TSC stall mat was my second choice, like I wrote I took the expensive way out!

It is just Urethane. It does not have the density or feeling of what I think you are talking about which I know as UHMW . I have that material on some of my woodworking tools.

Very nice. let us know how it works.
Sweet, and love the use of the milling machine! If I had blacktop instead of gravel, I'd do that too.

I tried the piece of pipe slid over the blade approach , it lasted 50 feet. Tried 2 types of pipe, drain PVC and the black sewer drain pipe that's more flexable.

There's gonna be a lot of posting if the east coast ever gets some snow...

The ATV gravel cutting is more or less angle iron. Search Polaris and you can get an idea. ATV'rs swear by them for gravel drives.
