Moding my subsoiler............ Maybe...........

I have a KK subsoiler that I have been using. I think I have subsoiled about 4 acres at 14"s.

So, with the 4520, I am 71"s wide. That kind of sucks because I cannot get overly close paths without running over the center of the line I subsoiled.

So, I am thinking about making a wider chisel. The current chissel is about 2.5 inches wide. I am thinking about going to about 5 inches. It makes me wonder if I would stress the KK unit too much? I have zero issue with pulling it! I think I could pull 2, and maybe that would be the way to go.... But I would like to work with what I have for now.

Any thoughts?

I can't see any harm in running over the newly broken seam. While it may pack the top surface it would take much more weight to compact it all the way down. So no worry in my opinion. Doing so puts you about 3' on center, should be about right.

I used to subsoil about 24" deep in Mississippi with a 3020, that was an anchor. I have a subsoil similar to yours now but our area is sandy enough not to need it in NM.

I guess it can't pack it any worse than it was.... I have some ground that is nice to work in the spring but untillable in the summer since it gets hard as a rock. I will try it and see, anything has to help.

I agree with Steve, I wouldn't worry about driving back over it. But I would think a double wide unit would save a lot of time.

I agree with both, I never worry about driving over it. Ken Sweet

A good two point subsoiler in hard ground is more than a 4520 can handle in my estimation. You might pull two points 12" deep, but a single larger point running deeper would be a real load.

I would suggest something along the lines of a parabolic ripper point instead of a straight shank. If I needed a subsoiler thats what I would do.

Its hard to put too much money into this small equipment. We just won the bid on this multch ripper for the farm. So, I can just go there and grab it when needed. Its one of those things where its fun to play and mod stuff.

I found a chissel tooth at the farm that is 5.5 inches wide and not as thick as the current chissel. I am going to try to put it on in my spare time and mess with it. It might work, and it might not.

Here is the implement we bid on. Not bad for 5,100.00 We are so small its hard to buy new stuff.

Do you plan on running that with your 4520?

Yes, so far i have zero issue pulling the current chissel as deep as I want. My fear is breaking the subsoiler...
