Hey, I'm new to the forum, I have a 2007 5 speed John Deere LA100 Riding mower. I was wondering if I could use it to plow a small garden plot and what not? Or would it really not be happy doing such a thing? I know its just a basic low end John deere Mower.

I recently bought a rear weight bracket and some weights for it. I plan to get a blade for the front and use it to clear some snow in a small drive way.

Thanks for any help guys!

Please do not try and use a moldboard plow on this. The transmission and frame are not designed for ground engaging implements and will not hold up. You would need a garden tractor to do any plowing. There are a lot of used John Deere garden tractors that can handle ground engaging implements like a plow, a disk harrow, a cultivator, a rear blade, etc. Even though your lawn tractor will push some snow, a garden tractor would be a better choice for that. Pushing snow puts a lot of strain on the frame and transmission. The transmission in your tractor is the light duty transmission, which is fine for mowing, but not much else.

John Deere garden tractors include the older 110 and 112, 200, 208, 210, 212, 214, 216, 240, 245, 260, 265, 280, 286, anything with GT before the number, i.e. GT242, GT225. Others include the older 120, the older 140, 300, 312, 314, 316, 317, 318, 320, 322, 330, 332, 400, 420, 430, 425, 445, 455, and the X400, X500 and X700 series. Some of these are pretty new and will cost a lot. Some are up to 50 years old and you can find some of these for under $1000. You will need an integral hitch or a 3 point hitch depending on model.

And Welcome to GTT.

I still haven't bought a garden tractor yet, Last year I gardened the "old fashioned" way and this year I think I'm gonna skip doing a garden since I have my first kid on the way. I just don't know how busy I will be! However I think maybe tax time in 2014 I hope to talk the wife into letting me purchase an old JD garden tractor and just using the LA100 to cutting the grass. Plus other lawn duties..

Nice pictures. It does seem your L100 gets it fair share of the work.

Who is ready for mowing season! My deere and I are! I still want to get some more stuff for my tractor however I still want to add a second heavier duty John deere to my fleet.
I ran to the dealer today to pick up some oil and I couldn't resist the photo op next to a 4640..

Did some last minute chores with the old oil..Then hauled the deck around from the shed..

Changed the oil..

Then installed the deck.

i wiped the whole tractor down and cleaned everything up, it was still pretty dirty from "fall leaf harvest" She's now looking good and ready to mow! I should be able to start mowing next weekend as long as everything isn't wet..
