It may be, but it's the fact that it uses square cut gears as opposed to beveled gears that makes it finicky to put into gear. The teeth must be perfectly aligned in order to mesh together. It has nothing to do with tolerances.

I always loved the whine of the nearly straight cut gears in an M22 rock crusher!

Anyway, I'll have to start digging into the whole shmere sometime in the future when I get time.

Since a frayed end of this thread has become a switch debate, why in that context have I had to endure so many cars where (insert gifted family members) can engage the starter with the engine running?? As cars got quieter become more of a (hassle, hazard, repair headache...). Since switch logic of an energized alternator (therefore turning) is rudimentary, why never used?
