Great forum, been reading all the talk about shutting gas off, stalling, etc.

My question- is I have a 1938 Unstyled B going to be picking up.
Is there a way to add a switch to the Mag. to ground it out (the way I have it on my Allis Chalmers).

I really like just a push/pull grounding switch.

Any idea where to hook one up or pictures of one, or if it would even work.

Usually, a push button is the choice for a mag,,,

With a switch,, you gotta remember

out=on,,, or in=on,,, :dunno:

Someone sells a grounding stud with a little red button that mounts on the mag. Maybe someone with a better memory than I can find the company. I made a similar insulated stud and added a wire from the stud (wired to the points) and mounted a push pull switch in a Radio Shack "handy box" mounted close to the operator platform on the flywheel side. This is a styled B, however. Have to pull out the switch to ground the mag. I wanted it to be pulled out to run, but haven't yet found the right kind of switch small enough to fit in the box. Yeah, my son and I both had a hard time remembering so he marked it with black marker last summer.

Hard to see the stud in this picture. It has two small hex nuts on it. The wire is not hooked up in the photo. Had to drill a hole in the mag. housing. Your mag. might be a different model, too.

Box mounted with an "L" shaped bracket and an existing bolt. The switch is grounded to the steel bracket, as the box is plastic.

HERES THE DEAL: There's a good chance it originally came with or now has a Wico Model C (or an AP) Magneto. If so they did NOT have any factory original kill switch or external wiring stud or kill switch option (possible to drill hole and use a wire but I don't like that plan). HOWEVER if it was replaced with the later Wico Model X Magneto they came with or could have added an onboard push to kill switch (see picture of red push to kill Wico X Mag switch) or a wiring stud from which you could run a wire up to the dash for an ON/Off or Push/Pull or Key or Toggle switch which killed the ignition if that wire was grounded.

HOWEVER my experience has been to improve re starting performance its best if you shut the tractor down by idling it then turning the gas off and letting it die from gas starvation after which I always opened the throttle wide open during the time it was to set not running.

SURE you can add or use a kill switch (all they do is ground out the points wire) which is good for fast/instant or emergency shut downs but if you have the time and theres no emergency at hand even if I had a switch Id shut it down by turning off the gas and letting it die versus leaving raw gas in the cylinder to wash oil off the rings and cylinder walls. My hand start 38 B was always much easier to restart if I killed it by turning off the gas versus using a switch

Excellent advice from an experienced JD "hand cranker", John T. I did run down a supplier for the kill button shown in the photo for the Wico "X" model. For anyone interested, try J & G Regional Services, Inc. - Robert's Carb Repair. I like the added safety factor for ours.

Indeed its safer to have an ON/Off or Push/Pull or Start/Run or dash Key Switch to kill the engine in case of emergency although that's NOT original, but heck with the darn Correct Police lol
