Can anyone tell me if the nut that holds the shredder blades on a Frontier RC2072 is metric or SAE? It measures about 1-11/16” but not sure if I need to buy a SAE socket of a metric socket. The manual doesn’t say but it is Part #TIFC711224

My WOODS BB72 uses 1 11/16" socket for the blade nuts, so I am guessing that is common size, and yours does too. :dunno:

I have the same cutter RC2072. It takes a 42 mm socket to loosen the nuts that hold the blades. I ordered a single 42 mm socket (12 point) from Amazon to take my blades off. Also, you will want a piece of metal pipe or 1” metal tube to use as a cheater bar to get them nuts loose.
I think the manual says 42 mm also (in the section instructing how to remove the blades ).

Soak with something like liquid wrench, PB blaster, even WD-40.
I'd get one inch tools; pull handle, long extension, and socket.
And a 12-15 inch 3/4 round stock to knock the old bolt's out with. And a two pound hammer.
If you put the round stock right in the middle of the bolt you can usually reuse the bolt and nut. The book usually says not too but if you cut a lot new bolts add up quickly.

I checked my manual for nut size and couldn’t find it listed - could of sworn it was in there somewhere.

I saw the 42 mm specification somewhere as that was how I knew to order a 42 mm socket. I have changed my blades once with this 42 mm socket and it fit perfect. Bolts are the original parts.

Interesting. Seems the answer is slightly evasive. 1-11/16", 41 mm. 42 mm. ??? I asked my local John Deere parts department and they didn't know what size it was. My Operators Manual doesn't list in the Torque Specifications Section (page 34) a 41 or 42 mm bolt size but it does show a 1-11/16's one.

Torque specs (page 34) for the 1-11/16" doesn't match the note in the Replacing Blades section of book (page 27) either which says "tighten to 425 ft-lbs., so it's pretty confusing.

Sooo, how do I know for sure what to torque it to and how do I know I have it tight enough without buy a Torque wrench that reads to those high numbers?

Sure appreciate all the responses as this is my first tractor and I am learning a lot!!!!

The 1-11/16" (or 41 or 42mm) is the size of the head, NOT the bolt.

For example, a 1/2"-13 bolt typically uses a 3/4" wrench, a 1/4"-20 bolt typically uses a 7/16" wrench ect.

On my Woods, I only had SAE (inch) sizes, Craftsman 12pt, non impact, to try and 1 11/16" fit and worked, but I did not measure the nut when I had it off.

I did see reviews on Amazon for 43mm sockets that said they bought them specific for a brush hog (no brand stated)

I want to buy a 6pt impact socket just for the farm for the brush hog, now I am uncertain what size to buy :mocking: I guess, I should take my calipers and remove the access door, and measure a nut.

If you look into Machinery's Handbook an 1 11/16" hex nut would be the recommended nut for an 1 1/8" bolt.
Heavy duty nut for that diameter stud would use a 1 13/16 nut.
For 1 1/8" stud with 8TPI you are looking at 330 ft/lbs for a grade 2; 740 ft/lbs for a grade 5 etc.
If you have a UNF thd, (12tpi) those torque values increase to 357 ft/lbs. and 801 ft/lbs respectively for grade.

I’m not for sure what the question is. Just bought the 2072 brush hog. My manual says you need a 42mm socket, and extension, and some manner of creating a lot of torque to change the blades. I’m not for sure how I’m going to get to 425 ft/lbs either. Those torque wrenches are expensive. Was looking at the torque multipliers on Amazon. Not really for sure how they work???

In SIMPLE terms; gearing. Input torque in multipled, but output movement is divided. A 3:1 ratio torque multipler will output 300lb ft for an input of 100lb ft, but it will take 3 input revolutions to make one output revolution. 4:1 ratio will give 4x input torque and 1/4 out put movement.

Torque multipliers also need to have a method to keep them from moving/turning, reaction torque, for this there will be a lever or bar that must be placed against something imovable.
