Hello everyone. I’m new to the riding mower scene ( buying new house ) and there’s a 4 year old LA125 with bagger system , 370 hrs for $800 at house I’m buying. Is that worth it ? Also. What is a “ good “ amount of hours in general. I’m in Ny

Thanks a lot !

The LA125 model was built in 2008 and 2009 so it isn't 4 years old. It's December so it's going on 9 years old at least. The LA1XX-series machines were superseded by the D1XX-series. The D1XX-series was superseded by the E1XX-series about a year ago.

370 hours on the engine isn't outrageous but the transaxle is the weak point on these things. The $800 asking price is about right based on what I've seen elsewhere. If you do decide to buy it, just keep in mind that it's a lawn mower, not a heavy duty garden tractor.

I have a D160 that I only use to mow about 2 acres here in MA. I put about 30 hours/year on mine.

Thanks for your input Jim. As far as the year , I’m going by what the owner said. He said he bought 4 years ago new from he think Home Depot And has about 1/3 of acre. Overall if used 4 months a year it’s about 23 to 24 hours a month. Seems like a lot to me but not sure. Nothing was changed on it besides battery

Yeah, I think he's fibbing! I bought my house in May of 2012. The 1st time I mowed I used the 20" push mower I owned from my previous postage stamp sized yard. The following week I went out and bought the D160. The D1XX machines were all that Lowe's, HD and the dealers had for Deere riding mowers at that point in time. The LA1XX machines were long gone from stores.

It should seem like a lot to you! Your spidey senses are working well!

The hours would be almost impossible. It takes me about an hour/week to mow. A 1/3rd of an acre shouldn't take more than 20 minutes. So that'd be ~1.5 hours/month. I mow from April through October. At 1 hour/mow for 25-26 weeks out of the year plus some minor piddling around that gets me to ~30 hours/year. I don't see how someone could possibly put 23-24 hours/month on a mower with only 1/3rd of an acre. He would have had to mow the lawn daily.

But if you take that 370 hours and divide it by 9 years you get to 40 hours/year which seems much more realistic if it was used to collect leaves, haul gardening supplies, etc...

100% agree with you. When I looked the model up , I couldn’t find anything with it even being sold even 5 years ago. I was told to not go the Lowe’s / Home depot route because it’s lower end & some parts plastic vs metal from actual dealers. Maybe if he drops it 500$ we can do business for time being. ?. Thanks again for the input. Greatly appreciated !

You were told wrong. The JDs at HD and Lowes are identical to the ones at the JD dealers.
Regarding the LA125, I agree that it is more than 4 years old. I have an LA135 that I bought in 2010. I have over 500 hours on it, and not been gentle with it, not even a little bit. And it is working fine. I do think the tranny is going to give out on me eventually, but again, I have pretty much abused it.
Offer him $500, and settle for somewhere in between. Check out your local craigslist for pricing in your area. I have seen many of the LA1xx series tractors going for $800+, depending on what attachments they have.

That's a fairly good estimate. I have about 1/2 acre and also use my tractor a bit for pulling a lawn cart around performing chores. I put approximately 50 hrs. per year on it.

In my area the local Lowes and HD contract with local JD dealers to assemble the tractors for them.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to see how much he’ll come down. No attachments come with it , only the bagger.
