Hello, Newb here. Just took delivery today of a 1025r with a 120 loader. I have a portion of my yard that has been overtaken by picker bushes (think blackberry bushes) and tall weeds. I would like to reclaim this area and plant some grass. What implement is best to do this with? I tried a "test run" today with dropping the bucket and back dragging it. It worked OK, but wondering if there is a better implement or method. Thanks in advance

I use a rock bucket; it's what I have, and it works well for scraping the ground and removing the vegetation without taking too much dirt. If you aren't opposed to herbicides, spraying them and then removing is an option. One other option with or without herbicides is to brush hog it, and then keep it mowed. You can overseed the the grass you want, and over time the blackberries will die due to not being able to develop leaves to carry out photosynthesis.

If you're not in a big hurry, my upper lot had a lot of black berry mixed in with the rest of the trash that had been ignored for years. Mowing a few years got rid of the blackberry and a lot of the other trash and started a good crop of grass/hay. Getting better as we now hay it each year. Nothing special done yet.

Did the same. Just mowed them down and kept the area cut. Easy peasy. Now if poison ivy was that easy.......

Get a rotary cutter and cut it, then overseed with grass if needed. You probably don't need to do much more than just cut it if it's just brambles and weeds and you may get a surprisingly okay yard just by continuing to finish mow the area once you've rough cut it.

Those brush blades work pretty well for stuff that grows straight up. When I bought my Stihl FS 130, I talked to the sales guy about what I needed to do. I had about a quarter acre of thick blackberries that were 6-8 feet high on uneven and rocky ground. He recommended, and I ended up getting a 24-inch hedge trimmer attachment. I can't find that same model on their website now, but it's not the Kombi version that they have with the extra shaft length. That thing cuts through blackberry canes like butter, even the random pieces of fence that I kept coming across. I could pretty quickly slice vertically and horizontally to chop up everything into smaller pieces. The only thing I'd say is that it was a bit of a physical job with that much weight out at the end of the trimmer.

If using a weed whacker with a brush blade, an add in pole section is handy. My pole saw attachment for the Ryobi included a 3' section to extend the reach. That section works great with other attachments like a brush blade.

Bush hog. The 1025R will handle a 4 footer easily.

How big of an area are we talking about? If a field, then a bush hog or a finish mower depending on your plans with the space. If smaller space and adding lawn/yard, then you might just want to try the trimmer approach. I used my MMM for what I could do with the tractor. The hill sections, the hedge trimmer attachment on my Echo trimmer worked best. I tried the brush cutter and it worked great other than it took forever since it was such a small cut. The hedge trimmer attachment did the trick for me.
