PLEASE HELP - JD955 PTO Lever Latch Installation?

558 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  4230Driver
Good afternoon all, I recently purchased a JD955 which I like a lot! It is OLD like me and it has some problems (not as many as me); the vertical PTO Lever will not stay in the "engaged" position once the PTO is activated. I just purchased the Latch, which looks a lot like a spring, made of tough wire, but I really have no idea how or exactly where it is supposed to fit on the back side of the dashboard? Somewhere on the vertical PTO Slot, I guess? Recently I read that JD110 thought it was a relatively easy installation process. Cannot find any pictures or diagrams showing where to place this Latch. Any and ALL suggestions are very welcome. Thanks So Much!

Did you purchase item number 24?
If so, looks to me it would attach behind the dash assembly.

Ahhhh yess.

The pto f all.

First
Check the seat switch ,Fuse and anything else easily electricly related.

The spring may be part of the problem but not nessessarily the culprit.

Look in through the left side panel when you engage pto.......
You will see a round magnet..... Try and poke something through to hold magnet up.
If held up...pto should engage.
If not....we got other issues.

Somewhere here in one of my posts about this is a link to the JD manuel and all related pages for troubleshooting.

In essence...if you hold magnet up and pto works...pto is fine.. Your problem is in seat switch or fuse area(known trouble spot).

I'll try and locate the link to fix.

Installing that spring will likely be a huge pita.
Start by removing Left side panel......Now you can slightly see in there.
This dash is an engineering nightmare....Nothing is easy to get too.
Perhaps if both left and right side panels are removed the center will slightly lift.
Put in a tach light bulb and a new light switch once...it was way more work than one would think.
I don't recall what holds that spring in but if pto is functioning properly it seems it would not be critical.
Its an electro magnet that keeps it engaged ...not the spring as I recall....been a while.

Thanks for your reply Flyweight and yes I did purchase item #24, You are correct it does install under left side of instrument panel and under the PTO Lever slot to be specific. Luckily, I had a friend whom is a pretty decent technician come over this afternoon and figured it out! A little difficult to figure out, but a lot more difficult to actually install when you know where it fits. Success really feels great! One more problem checked off!

Thanks for your reply Dan. As a matter of fact I have probably read almost all those posts you talked about. In this case the PTO was functioning just fine, but the PTO lever would not stay at the top of the slot unless I held it there; for me - - that is a no-go. My friend came over this afternoon and we figured out where the PTO Lever Spring Latch was supposed to mount. On the underside of the dashboard beneath the PTO Lever slot are three "ball-type" rivet heads (maybe 5/16" diameter), one at the bottom and two at the top of the slot. The closed end goes around the outside of the bottom ball and the open end of the spring latch fits between the two balls at the top of the PTO Lever slot. We had to remove both side panels in order to be able to see well enough to get this latch installed. Did not have to remove the fuel tank. Thanks so much for all the information you shared!
