Each year I always plant a few hundred poplar trees around the property. These trees grow fast and seem to be loved by the grouse and woodcock. I try to cut them down when they get larger and a bunch more will show up. It works well in small sections, but these are not the nicest of tree so I try to keep them under wraps.

They are very simple to reproduce. I cut a 7 to 8" part of a branch making sure to have at least one bus close to the top. Remove all other buds and place it 2/3's the way into the ground. It must be the correct way as putting it in upside down will not work.

So this year a friend has asked me to help him with a small wind block he wants to start. 20 trees. Its been so wet that I have had a hard time getting out and getting the cuttings.

Yesterday I decided to try to get a few and I think its too late. You want to plant them 2 to 3 weeks before they bud. So, I thought I would try to get these going in the house.

These are also a bit smaller cuttings than I normally do. I have no clue if it will work....

20 acres. It was our farm prior to me turning it into a woods. I have purchased and planted over 7,000 trees todate and probably planted another 1,500 to 2,000 cuttings.

Many of the poplar are very close to give cover to smaller animals. Thats why you might have seen me post pictures of the fox and other animals I have trapped.

I joked last year when the snow fell that we were getting invaded by rabbits. It was not odd to walk outside and see 20 sitting around. :lol:

Sounds like a really nice spread. We only have 1.3 acres, but are on a lake with deer, beavers, eagles, ducks and geese!

Poplars are nice, but I've been cutting down a lot of small gum trees around the edges of the fields, still have much more to do. I need to plant some Dogwoods and a few other flowering things this fall.

Randy, that's about 200' from the front door in 2009. 2010 had some coyotes come through, we have less wild turkeys and rabbits now, these things go in cycles.

Back door view enclosed. These are a mix of poplar (big one on the left), hickory (bright yellow) and the evil gum trees (depressing, dirty red-brown). Also enclosed is another view I get from time to time, I know I'm getting old but when the vultures gather to watch you work it makes you wonder...

Dellwas, can't wait to see some pix. A good digital SLR is on my list for someday. Point and shoot with simple zoom is convenient, but I miss real lenses with real glass. My 28 to 75mm was my favorite for SLR "point and shoot" stuff.
