Protecting the inner tube Valve stem?

783 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Treefarmer
I was brush hogging with my JD 1650 MFWD when I must have snagged the valve stem on my left front tire and pulled it from the inner tube and clean as a whistle. Cost me $86.00 for new tube and to get the huge tire re mounted to the rim. Anyone know of product or ideas to protect the valve stems? I was really glad it did not happen to the even larger rear tires loaded with Rim Guard. Tires and tubes are less than a year old, maybe 20 hours on them.
Thanks, Bob L

Seems like just a weird coincidence that never will happen again. What were you bush hogging that would do that? Maybe there was some barbed wire there?

heavy grass and some brush about an inch to inch and a half in diameter. No barbed wire in the particular spot I was working.
weld on a 2” threaded pipe nipple and add a cap. I use these on farm tractors in the woods and I have never broken a valve stem.

Every idea I have involves a bit of welding.
What shocked! said. It wont happen again.

I wouldn't bet on that not happening again. It may be rare but if you look at logging equipment all the valve stems are shielded for a reason. If it happens again, I'd have a protector welded on before remounting the tire.

I meant if he follows shocked's advice and uses the pipe nipples and cap it wont happen again.

Even an open ring will likely take care of it. That's all that's on many tractors.

For tubeless tires this might be an option:
