I'm looking to add another cab 4wd tractor to the farm. In my area (Arkansas) there's not alot of the 4055-4455s used. Well none actually. But I keep finding these 4960 and 4955s that are mfwa and in good condition. I'm just worried about the use of my current 540 pto diven equipment with the 1000 pto tractors. Can y'all give me some insight on what you think or have come across?

I'll be trying to run a hay mower, baler, bush hog. Not sure of anything else. But I have other tractors I can use they are just 2wd so won't be ideal for feeding hay in winter.

Thanks for any info and help!

Welcome to GTT
The reason 4255,4455 tractors are so scarce is because they are very good tractors. I know because I've owned a 4255 since Feb '93.

OK now to subject of 1000 rpm's yes one can operate 540 rpm implements with a 1000 rpm only tractor but engine would need to be operated at about 1200-1300 engine rpm's which JD advised to not lug these engines below 1500 rpm's. My advice would be if you purchased a 1000 rpm only pto tractor is to trade for 1000 rpm equipment or change existing equipment to 1000 rpm or install a high $$$$ conversion gearbox on tractor pto shaft. I'm not in favor of added gearbox to tractor pto shaft because it changes the geometry of the driveline between tractor & implement

I agree, your 540 PTO equipment will not handle 1000 PTO input. Those tractors are rated at 2200 rpm, so you would be running way too slow.
I would NOT buy these tractors for PTO use if you do have/plan to get the 1000 PTO implements.

Is the pto not reversible on the tractor you are looking at? on some tractors, you take out a snap ring and flip the stub shaft to 540 or 1000, whichever you want.

One thing that is being overlooked here is that the 1000 RPM PTO's use either a 20 spline or 21 spline shaft vs a 6 spline shaft on a 540 RPM PTO. Therefore you cannot just hook up a 540 RPM attachment to a 1000 RPM tractor due to the difference in splines. However, TractorData.com shows both 4055 and 4455 tractors to be 540/1000 RPM with 1 3/8 shafts which translates to 6 spline or 21 spline. Therefore, you should be able to pull the PTO shaft out and reverse it to switch between PTO speeds.

Good luck on finding one.

20 -55 series JD rowcrop tractors under about 140 pto HP require 2 different pto stub shafts 6 sline for 540 rpm & 21 spline for 1000 rpm IE no reversing of pto stub shafts. JD tractors of the same era are 1000 rpm pto only.

I am thinking at the that PTO HP size (4955 & 4960), which are 200+ PTO HP, they only offered with 1000 rpm PTOs.

I have a 2955. But am wanting mfwa. There aren't many options around here. Tractor house shows lots of options from 3155 up. Which would prolly fit my program better. The big tractors are just becoming more available here at reasonable prices. But I'm starting to see why that is. I'm starting to think that I need to stick to the 540 tractors.

You're correct. As I stated ALL 20-55 series rowcrop tractors above 140 pto hp have 1000 only pto shafts. This includes the 4960 also. 2955/3155 are actually classified as ""utility not rowcrop tractors"" & have 540/1000 pto shafts.

I went to TractorHouse.Com and looked for these tractors you said you would like and you are correct there was only one that I saw in Ark. However, depending on how far you are willing to look there are several in other states with the features and 540 - 1000 PTOs you were looking for.

Yea I don't care to travel to get one. I just don't want to haul one back from Pennsylvania or Montana or canada! But I'll look around here and see what I can find. Maybe I'll get lucky and find one. Just wanted more opinions from people who are more educated in the area than myself!

It seems like when ever I find the "perfect" tractor on tractorhouse, it's 5 or more states away :nunu:
