PTO switch dead?

3273 Views 26 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Factory5150
Sunday morning I was happily mowing. I lowered the rpms, turned off the PTO, set the brake and shifted to neutral. I hopped off to check on something (had to move a toy the kids left out that was in my way). Hopped back on and the PTO toggle does nothing. I messed with the PTO shift (I have only used mi-mount since this tractor was new my '18 or '19 newer forward leaning ROPs), turned the ignition on and off a few times, moved it around the yard tried again, nothing. I have the dealer scheduled to pickup on Friday - but hoping someone here can point me in a few simple to check directions before they arrive.

Thank you all for your knowledge and help in advace,

Yeah mine died too. You can find them on ebay. Certain ones(pull out) will even eliminate the reverse lock out. Just check they have not changed the plug. Doubt they did but you never know. They can be pried out from the top with a flat blade screwdriver and unplugged, then plugged back in and pushed back in the dash. No disassembly of anything. I believe it is 15 bucks. Look for the heavy duty one, with higher amperage rating.

Is/was there any code or messages displayed in the digital strip on the ICC?

And, have you done any PTO switch mods to enable mowing in reverse? I assume you have the rocker switch vs the toggle knob.

Oh really, which certain ones might those be? Got a link? Mine's a rocker switch but I'd switch to the push-pull switch if there is one that bypasses RIO.

same! (after the dealer fixes this). I also should have noted, machine ahs 110 hrs, primarily mowing in the summer, plowing with the fel in the winter

Does that switch have a built-in RIO override?

I have the Technical Manual open to the electrical diagrams section right now.

And I am wondering - if you change the PTO selection lever to rear PTO only, is the PTO switch on the dash still inoperative, or will the rear PTO engage and spin?

Do either of the PTO indicator lights on the ICC come on?

Will the engine start with the PTO switch turned to the on position?

I shift it to rear pto only, and still nothing. Can't try starting the engine with it on, this is the newer style rocker switch.

I had the push/pull PTO switch go on the 2025R. You could often wiggle it and get it to go. Cannot get to the back side of the dash on the 2025R, and the front Ujoint could stand a lube. So, I had the dealer do both when they picked it up.

I think the idea is that since it doesn't have the RIO position at all (it is listed as a 2 position switch so just on/off) that just by chance the contacts are arranged such that the RIO circuit is closed whenever the switch is on.

Perhaps I'll buy one, pull my existing one out and compare. Of course this only helps if the connevtor is not any different on the rocker switch vs the push-pull switch, and the push-pull switch physically fits the instrument panel opening currently occupied by the rocker switch.

let me know how this works out for you. Once the green baby is back from the dealer, I may do the same :)

I don't really remember. But easy enough to jump when switch is out. Then no more BS.

That push pull PTO switch is a LONG TIME use switch and generally very reliable, assuming you purchase a quality switch.

The push pull PTO switch part number LVA21437 is used on a whopping 556 different Deere machine applications, everything from the Gen 1 1 series back to machines made in the 1980's and even earlier. Of course, those machine's generally don't have the RIO override, which I personally think is a pain............

If at all possible, I would replace the rocker switch with the Push Pull as it works so reliably. Plus the same switch is on my Exmark commercial machine. This is a very widely used switch.............

The one I quoted above is a higher amperage rating. Should last longer than the deere part that went FUBAR, at only 4 years.

for anyone who is interested: Tractor was delivered last Friday (I was out of town until late last night). Tech replaced what they said was a faulty switch, and left me the broken part. Apparently the extended warranty does NOT cover electronics, they banged me 60 bucks for the switch plus 45 mins of tech time in addition to the transport fee. A little shy of $300 all together. Kind of steep, but I noticed they rinsed it down with a power washer at least. I tested the PTO in the dark, everything sounded about right to me.

Wow! Sixty bucks for a switch that lists at GreenFarmParts for $28.15, before the GTT discount.

This is an example of why service departments are such cash cows for dealerships - car, truck, ATV, UTV, and tractors. It would take me about 45 minutes to change mine, since I have done the disassembly 3 times before, so the tech time sounds fair to me.

15 bucks and 10 minutes you would have been golden.
