Put mine up for the winter!

Drove my new John Deere 4005 to my mom's farm, and put it in the barn for the winter. It's about 12 miles away, but I feel much better about it being there than out on my open 5 acre lot in the weather. Hopefully get the house and garage built this coming year so it can be there permanantly! Just thought I'd share. Anyone else?

Love that barn! thanks for the pictures. :thumbup1gif:

Mine sees year round use, so unfortunately it has to sit outside for right now. Like you, I hope to have her under a roof real soon. Once it is, I will probably take the cab off too.
Thanks for the post BGT!

So are you doing anything special to fend off the mice? They like wiring and seats. :empathy: Moth balls are a great detourant.
Under a roof

Love that barn. Wish I had one like it. Plan on putting in a simple pole barn in January. Got to get my 1026 out of the Florida sun and rain. :snow:
Nice barn and real nice tractor. I like the style of the X005 series. They look more like the 30 and 40 series Waterloo tractors.

Don
Thanks guys. Yeah wish the barn was mine. Yeah I love this tractor for the simplicity and metal hood and fenders. Hadn't really thought about the mice. Where can you get moth balls?
You can get moth balls at walmart or any home store by the mouse traps and household cleaners.
Mine sits out too, see my thread on 2305 wouldn't move. I'm probably going to put up a metal shed of about 200 sq. ft. Don't need a building permit from the County if it is less than 215 sq. feet. Won't be wired but the main garage will be right beside it.

Thanks for the pics. Love the old barns. Guess no snow removal gets done with it then?? :)

Do you plan on running it once in a while during the winter??

I agree, thanks for the pics!:good2:
Raymond...thanks for the pics. The JD looks right at home there! That is desktop/screensaver quality.
Do you know how old the barn is? From the weather pattern...with the top, under the eaves, not as greyed as the majority,I'm guessing less than 10 yrs old. Looks as if someone had a portable sawmill and made their own siding.
You might want to check on your insurance terms for the tractor. Some will only cover it if its on your property.
Keep those great pics coming!

I might have put mine away for the winter also if we do not get some snow soon....... Been over a month since I had her out:empathy3:

Exactly right on the moth balls. There are several of the shelters along the Appalachian Trail that had moth balls spread around to keep the mice away. I've never had any problems with mice from storing my tractor in the barn. Asked my 80 year old dad and he said he never has had any either.

I do start my tractor through the winter every couple of weeks or so and run it until the engine is warm.

Nice pictures too, thanks for sharing.

Nice pics, one day too when I grow up, i hope to get a 4xxx unit!
Too cold

I got my new tractor in early December and got 7 hours on it. I've had to put it up though. It's 42 below this morning and definitely too cold for the hydraulics. I put a trickle charger on the battery and covered the tractor. It should be above zero by mid-February to March. The tractor starts and runs great down to zero (you just have to let things warm up). I kind of chuckle when I see tractors put up for the winter that far South. I've definitely gotten used to cold weather up here in AK. Now is when I wish I'd got a cab. Happy New Year.

Cool !
Its 52 degrees in my garage...and I'm freezing with the portable heater as close too me as the hose will reach. 42 below? I cant imagine. I work and install walk-in freezers that operate from -10to -20 ...I cant stay in them for more than 15 minutes at a time. How can you work in that extreme? ..or anything for that matter. I bet there aint no taking a wiz when outside!:laugh:

Creativity

When Ya gotta go you get creative.... It warmed up this morning. It's only -29. It's warming up since it is going to snow. Wild that we have to warm up to snow. If it gets warm enough (above zero) we'll get good snow. I can pump warm air under the tractor for a few hours then fire it up to do some snow removal. I have heat pads attached to the oil pan, transmission, and a heated battery blanket, plus the internal block heater. All those are plugged into a power strip attached to the frame. I need to add one more heating pad to the bottom of the hydraulic pump/reservoir. If I plug in for several hours it will warm all the fluids which makes things alot easier on the tractor. It works the same with all the other equipment and trucks up here. Our local JD Dealer installed the block heater, oil pan and trans heating pads. It's not a bad idea if your going to be cold starting your tractor. Cold starting to me is anything below about 15 farenheit. So far I'm lovin my 3005. Just wish it would warm up so I can play. My wife worries that this summer I'll suffer from sleep deprivation. We get 24 hour daylight (21 hrs of darkness now). As long as I have diesel I'll play on the tractor. I can't wait.
