Reverse ROPS?

2234 Views 19 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  csnyder750
I am not sure if this has been tried or discussed here before, but...

I have been annoyed by my ROPS since I acquired my 2018 1025R. The forward leaning setup is either way too high to go into my 7' garage door opening or is always in the way when folded down. I had originally removed it altogether and was going to acquire another top bar to modify it.
Like many of you, doing major damage to my gutter, fascia and garage door was just a matter of when, not if. There is no way regardless of the measure used, that I would possibly remember to fold the bar up and down each time.

I decided to experiment with reversing the top bar to see what the height would end up at, as well as whether the orientation would interfere in the operation of the backhoe. The good news is that it comes in at 82.5" tall, giving me 1.5" to spare and doesn't interfere with the backhoe. You have duck under it to get into the backhoe seat, but after that it is perfect.

Before the safety nannies chime in about liability, lawsuits, death, dismemberment, blah, blah,...save your keystrokes.

I realize it is may not be as strong in the event of a rollover due to less of the flanges overlapping. Regardless, I am willing to take my chances with the small chance that all four welded flanges would break off. I think it offers some protection rather than the none I had with it removed.

You wouldn't want too trade your forward leaning ROPS for a rear leaning ROPS would you?

I have a 2016/17 1023E with a rear leaning ROPS but I need a forward leaning one.
I’m not starting in on the safety but that’s not doing much for the operator in the case of a roll over so why is it even on there at this point? Get a string line and pull it from the top of the rops to the top of the front brush guard then sit on your tractor. I’d bet your head is above the line. I’m not disputing the safety here, just wondering if it’s doing anything at all. I’d pull it off if it was me. In fact I did and built my own. That’s of course just my opinion and I’m not advising the removal of any rops but just what I’d do myself. There is however some rear ballast advantage there albeit pretty high up. Let us know how she handles

If I understand correctly, the ROPs is not to protect your head in the event of a roll over, but to make sure the operator in not crushed under the machine. Having room so you can breath will keep you alive and allow the Doctors to get you back to health. Being crushed only allows the Mortician to take care of your remains.

The ROPS is meant to keep the tractor from breaking your neck in the event of a rollover. If your head is above the line from the top of the brush guard to the top of the ROPS, as stated by @Kbar, the ROPS is not protecting you.

Assuming you're wearing the seatbelt. If you get thrown off then anything can happen.

Took 3 years before getting a single reply though and the OP hasn't been around since last August. So it kind of work.

Weird... I am on another forum and they are having a similar issue with old posts becoming new again. usually the "poster" who is bringing them forward is a bot.

This guy registered in 2017, and has 56 posts, if he is a bot... well he's an exceptional one.

AI. 😧

I'm not saying he is a bot. I'm saying in the other forum that is experiencing a bunch of old topics coming new again, the posters who post on the old topics to bring them to the front page are usually bots. They are new posters who have 1 or 2 posts. That forum has come out and talked about it and are actively trying to find a solution to it as well as deleting or moving posts to keep the old posts off the front page.

Seen that in other forums too. Usually because they need a few posts under the belt before they are allowed to start posting what they really want to advertise.

Be nice if some type of warning device/mechanism could be installed on the ROP to warn a OP that a low flying obstruction is approaching. Would rather have something like that "kill" the engine instead of the seat switch thing.

A tall CB antenna whip on the front same height as the ROPS, if the antenna moves, you're asking for trouble.

I now understand why transport trucks and RVs get stuck under bridges.
I’ve debated cutting mine down or fabbing up a shorter one. But the safety geek in me won’t let go. I never drove in the shop on my 2015 1025 but whacked the header on the garage on the house with the ROPS pretty hard once. I think I did a little wheely. My 2020 1025 has a BH and I’ve almost torn both shop doors off. I beat them out, drilled and replaced pop rivets and spot welds. Got them working. I said I’d never do it again then did. Here’s my solution, a visual reminder on the doors if I don’t flip it back when done BHing. Has worked so far. I tied a string and the plastic off one of those wire flags so it would dangle when door is up. Only problem I’ve had is if the wind blows it while lowering the door, the infrared eye on door trips them reverses it open again.

There’s a thread on this a guy went above and beyond alerting hisself from rops bashing into his garage. Pretty in depth but for the life of me I can’t find it
