how can you engage the pto while not sitting in the seat? for instance, using a wood chipper alone john deere 3038e

I don't think the "E" series provides for that without some modifications. Here is a bit from the online owners manual:

[h=3]Using Rear Power-Take-Off (PTO)[/h]IMPORTANT: Avoid Damage! Use rear mounted equipment rated for 540 rpm. Do not operate PTO over 540 rpm mark on tachometer.
NOTE: The PTO is only operational with the operator in the seat.

I used to use a tie down chain in a feed bag sitting on the seat of our 3038e to run the chipper. However, this winter the seat froze & wouldn't let me run the machine until I jumpered the presence switch connector on the seat bottom. That encouraged me to plug in a toggle switch (via male & female spade connector pigtails) in parallel with the presence switch to let me over-ride it if needed. The only time I bypass the safety is if I am running the chipper (-or if the seat gets frozen again). I used the connectors to allow the unit to be easily returned to stock condition if needed.

Really? The latest U.S. and European operator's manual still contain this note:

NOTE: The PTO is only operational with the operator in the seat.

I have a PTO override switch that I put on my 4200 so I could run my FIMCO sprayer's hand gun without remembering all the silly steps to go through to allow the PTO to run when someone isn't in the seat.

Just an update on this thread..
I had the same problem with the PTO and wood chipper.... I didn’t want to bypass the seat switch because of my forgetfulness.. I’d eventually get off and leaving in gear... wanted to keep that safety system intact.. I have a 3038e and all I did was pull off the right armrest panel( the one with the pto knob on it.. and installed a cheap switch right beside the pto knob..there is three wires goin to the pto switch( red, yellow and orange... the red is 12v+, the yellow is the pto and the orange is to the seat Safety system...
All I did was wire the cheap switch in parallel with the pto switch to the red and orange. When I turn the switch on I can start the pto when not on the seat... the neutral safety and seat switch are still operational and the tractor will still stop if it’s in gear and no one is on the seat...

When you do a search for running the 3038e PTO with an empty seat, this is the top search hit so I thought I would update it since I had the same problem. I have a 2019 3038e and the manual I received clearly states you must be in the seat to operate the PTO, but this is incorrect.

Sit in the seat and start the tractor.
Make sure it is in Neutral and the parking brake is On.
Leave the seat and then turn on the PTO. It and the tractor will continue to run.
If you start the PTO while still seated, and then leave the seat, the seat safety switch will kill the tractor.
