Can someone please go over the correct alignment for the u-joints on the front mounted snowblower? I seem to always get easily confused about this. Thanks.

Off the top of my head here.... Them Main drive that connects to the PTO should be lined up with the Snow Blower drive.... The U-joints should all be in Phase. Not sure how to say it correctly.

I'm not sure I follow this and want to make sure I have mine right. There are two shafts. One that goes from mid PTO output shaft to front quick hitch. The other goes from the quick hitch to the blower housing.

I understand that when you have two u-joints on the same shaft, they need to be in phase with the same i/o angle but when you have two separate shafts, it won't matter if the joints from one shaft are phased with the joints of the second shaft. I suppose unless you go out of your way to incorrectly phase the input and output of the first shaft and then compensate with the input/output being out of phase the opposite direction the second shaft but... why?

I assume if JD required the mid shaft and front shaft to be in a specific phase with each other they would have used a keyway instead of a spline. It also should be listed in the install manual... and it wasn't as far as I recall.

Perhaps I'm missing what you are saying. I don't recall being able to separate the two u-joints on either of the shafts so I doubt that's what you mean.

In a perfect world, each driveshaft would be balanced and, as such, the phasing of the two driveshafts when coupled could be ignored. Deere doesn't balance the driveshafts, it would add a significant production expense and considering the RPMs these run at, it is not typically an issue.

While I don't believe it is mandatory, I would consider it a good practice to correctly phase the two driveshafts when connecting the snowblower, broom or other front PTO drive attachment. This is done by connecting the two so the U-joint yokes are at 90 degree intervals, so as to equally distribute the weight around the perimeter of the rotating assembly.

There is a lengthy 12+ page long thread on the forum about snowblower vibration that discusses front carrier bearing failures, driveshaft upgrade from 1.5" to 2" diameter, grease seepage, driveshaft balance and phasing. A few contributors reported a reduction in vibration by correctly phasing the U-joint orientation between the two shafts when coupling them together.

Thanks Kenny. I accompanied my bride to Texas for a few days and due to the amount she takes with her (one of the pitfalls of being married to a trophy wife), I couldn't take my laptop. So I've been utilizing her work laptop, an Apple. The industries I've been involved throughout my working years and now have always been Microsoft. So I feel like a fish out of water utilizing this Apple and doing anything with it becomes an exercise in frustration.

I was looking at it yesterday and my question is...is there a correct alignment for the front blower shaft to the undercarriage mid-mount shaft?

The best you can do is to align the yokes so the "cross" is aligned on both shaft sections.
