I wonder, is there a way to speed up a deere 300 series? After getting spoiled by another tractor which goes 8 mph, and the fact that a 317 can only go 6.5, I want something as quick.

Also, will a 420 rear end fit in a 317 with no mods?

If your 317 feels slow, your hydraulic pump may not be as efficient as it was new. The only way to fix that is rebuild it or get one with lower hours/better condition. How many hours do you have on it?

Another thing to address is your linkage and swash plate. Is it adjusted so that you are getting the full amount of forward and reverse out of it? I know on my 400 I have to hold that lever all the way forward in order to get max speed otherwise it settles back towards the idle position. I have never bothered to adjust it because it hasn't been worth the hassle of tearing into that part of the tractor for as much as I use it these days.

Well, you could raise the engine RPM, but if 1mph transport speed makes all the difference, maybe get a different tractor.
While I certainly understand wanting to get from point A to point B in the shortest time possible, speed is generally a tradeoff for power.
My Exmark will hit 12mph. My 318 7. My 318 has always seemed plenty fast enough for me over the last 32 years...even after having faster equipment.
Maybe its because I know that faster means less power to the ground, and since my 318 does get used with ground engaging equipment, I dont mind the trade off.
I suppose if you just mow with it, it might be a problem, but most garden tractors wont mow well at their top speed anyway.


And no, a 420/430 hydro will not fit in a 317 with no mods. Youll need quite a few to make that one work. They are completely different frames, along with just about everything else. The 317 is whats referred to as a closed frame tractor, while the 420 (and all the 300 series after the 317) are referred to as open frame. There was a major redesign when the 318 was introduced, so making one fit would require more work than just selling it and getting a 318 or 420.
The 420 into the 318 (or other similar vintage 300 series) is done quite often, and is mostly a drop in, with the exception of making holes to access the diff lock and 2 speed lever.

Well with my plan the 317 is about the only financially viable tractor for the magnum swap. I want the h2 but 318 rollers sell for at least 700$ and to get a 316 roller and an h2 kit is almost as much. Plus for a magnum swap a 317 is a direct bolt in.

I was wondering why my 420 seemed so fast compared to the old 140. I like my cars fast, but the tractor is OK putting along if it'll pull what I need it to.

The engine in my wife's Honda will turn 9,300 RPM all day long,,
just readjust the governor speed to 8,000 RPM,, the tractor will run ~> 12MPH,,

if the engine will not run that speed,, it needed rebuilt anyway,,, :dunno:

Balancing the engine would be easier than adjusting the transmission,,

If you do not like running your engine that fast,, take the tires off a CASE 446, and put them on the JD,,
the JD WILL go faster,,

you may need to alter the fenders, to suit the tires,,, :flag_of_truce:

Just because people ask $700 doesn’t mean that’s what they are worth, and that’s why the adds stay posted.

I have flipped quite a few, and $700 is about the value of a running working 318 without attachments.

I’ve had to part out 317’s as running and working I refused to lower my price below $500, after 2 rounds of that I refused to buy any more.

When I break out my 400, it's about 50/50 on what range it's in. I go with low to till, but high to move around my property. That thing will scoot along if you let it.

I rarely use high range on my 3025E as it is too fast for rough terrain to be honest.

I do understand the idea of mowing fast, especially now that I have a ZTR for that task.

Sounds like the OP either needs to jettison the tractor or put a bigger engine in it. I am wondering if the rear transaxle is geared so low that wouldn't make a difference either:greentractorride::greentractorride:

I don’t have far to travel across my property, but I did have to mow when a torrential thunderstorm moved in as I started. I was amazed what the 60 would do at full speed low. With the suspension seat that was all the tractor could do without a seatbelt.

I used to put my 112 in neutral going down hill between lawns the steering got super sketchy around 10mph, 20 was something I’d like to not repeat. High speed wobble mixed with tire bounce.

When I lived in Kentucky we lived next to my kids elementary school and I would bring the 400 over there during their fall festival to tow around a barrel train. To cover the 1/4 to the school I would put it in high and going down hill was adventure because much like your 112 my steering is sketchy, probably worse since the 400's turning radius is so bad and the hydraulic assist isn't exactly instantaneous! I bet mowing wide open was a pretty bouncy ride. Good times.:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I stil haven't picked up my 317. Weather's been too bad. The briggs will run at the same speed as the kt17 but I think it has a little bit more torque. I know on a cub cadet and a Deere the hydro cam pivot plate move the same amount but I think the deere is geared wayyy lower.
