I will be heading out later this week for week of camping near the infamous Sturgis Bike week - So just thought I'd throw some feelers out to see who may be going to the Mother of all motorcycle rallys. Pictures are sure to follow on this thread.

I'll be there-this will be my 2nd trip out there with the first being in 2002.

I've been going somewhere with a great friend once a year for the last 20+ years and this will be our second loooong trip together, 16 days and an expected 6000 miles traveled whereas we usually only average 1000-1500 miles in about 6 days.

Oh, and yes we will be riding...trailers are for

I'm no biker, but we'll have a whole lot of them passing through on their way to Sturgis.

Last year we were hauling hay out to the ranch. Two pickups, gooseneck trailers and small square bales. There's a little bar we would have lunch at in the tiny town of Hawk Springs Wyoming. Little bitty place, nobody ever goes there except the locals. They even have a truck scale so the area ranchers can weigh their cattle. We pulled in once during Sturgis week and found the entire parking lot filled with bikes. The place was packed elbow to elbow inside, and when we walked in it was like hearing the proverbial needle screech across a record. Everyone in the place was wearing leather and vests except for two guys in jeans and cowboy hats. I think if the girl at the bar hadn't recognized us and said hi some of the patrons may have asked us to leave. Felt like I was living a David Allen Coe song, "where bikers stare at Cowboys, who are laughing at the hippies, who are praying they'll get out of here alive..." :cowboy:

I wish! Never made it and probably never will.
Unfortunately when you WORK at a dealership having the extra cash for trips & your own motorcycle don't come easy.
If you are the owner or related to him/her it's a different story. I have been watching the tail light for to many years.

KE8LW-

You're traveling to one of my favorite spots on earth, The Black Hills of SD. I grew up near and in Rapid City, SD; I left there 34 years ago and have returned too infrequently since.

I've never been to the Rally, but 40 years ago I sneaked into the short track races near the hill climb site with some buddies.

The weather should be superb along with the sunsets; please be safe and don't become one of the accident statistics that come along with creating the largest temporary city west of the Rockies for a week. Also, please eat some Beef jerky from Sturgis Meats.

Ride Safely,
Brian

Thank you for your work - I know all about how money doesn't come easy. Been there, I drove a 20+ year old truck for 5 years, I had truck beds flopping in the wind, no floor boards either side, and fenders almost non existent. so I could get my first hog paid for, that's the hard one. After that you got your down payment and makes it expensive but more reasonable.

Sorry for you luck buddy but I do hope to one day see you there, it is a rally like no other.

Thanks Brian - I hope for a safe good ride and some donating to them great black hills. I love the area and the sites are absolutely beautiful. Never had the jerky from Sturgis meats so Looks like I will try to remember head there and get me some JERKY... thanks for the heads up. I like the rally but honestly just use rally for an excuse to get myself outwest and do the riding in the best part of the country.

Those of you coming from the east and traveling I90 are going to be passing right by me. You are more than welcome to swing by for some of my hospitality if we can work it out. It would most likely be an evening or weekend fellowship. I would love to meet you for some chit chat. It does not matter if it is to or fro. Have a safe ride everyone! :thumbup1gif:

I am north of Pierre SD on hwy 34 & 14 so the amount of bikes will be increasing drastically the next few weeks! Last year we were new town and my daughter hadn't seen anything like it. She just stood there and waved at them and one stopped and told her how cute she was and gave her a high five she still talks about that at 4 years old

For those of you traveling to Sturgis this year I hope you have great weather, safe travels and a memorable trip. :good2:

My first MC trip to Sturgis was in 1974. I rode a 1973 HD FX Superglide. Have been back a half dozen times since. 500-700 miles a day. Can't believe how popular this destination has become. There's a lot going on but the crowds turn me off. I'm not into long lines or overcrowded events.

Since Ms. SGS got her license we usually ride together. Back roads and no more than about 200-250 miles a day at the most. Maybe one day my son and I will take a couple of weeks and ride out during the off season.

Oh my ... Now if you rode a 70's bike out there kudo's to you!! Pretty sure in that era I'd be trailering, bikes have came a long way on the comfort. I do agree the crowds can suck, I do try to stay out of the congested area's. My first few years I had to have the full Sturgis experience so I was in the mess of the congest. Now I use this time of year as an excuse to ride out west into beautiful country side. 5-700 days are an average for us when out there. Unless of course I'm on may way home. My way home has been a one day trip that is a long 1150 mile day. Getting to strugis is two days but trip home unless downpour is iron butt.

If I had the money I'd go buy a bike just so I could see your shop first hand. :thumbup1gif:

Everyone enjoy the self and ride safe

I went twice and once was rainy and the second time was HOT!! We rode by the bank in Rapid City on the temp was 112. That's hot!! My wife has ridden her own bike since 79 I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm on vacation this week but duties keep me around home. The one good thing this week my new 1025R is being delivered Thursday. By the way the last time we went to Sturgis we trailered there that was the HOT time. Ride safe:bigthumb::usa

Here's to a great time and I'll pray for safety and peace.

I have been twice. My sister lives in Box Elder, SD which is a few minutes east of Rapid City. Dad and I would trailer the bikes out because we had another mission. My niece was moving back to my folks home while she attended Spring Arbor College (they call themselves an university now which is the dumbest thing on record they ever have done, but that is another story). So we would stay at my sister's house and enjoy bike week and then load up all the stuff my niece needed for another school year and her and truck them back to Michigan. The years we went out there all where at or above 100•F with stupid high humidity. All most too hot to enjoy much of it. Deadwood and the back roads from Rapid City was by far my favorite place to hang out. I did like Keystone and Custard State Park. Nothing like a large group of bikers shutting down the engines while a herd of cautious buffalo crossed the road just a few yards away.

My dad spent most of his working life in foundries. Took its toll on his eyesight. Could not see well in the dark. So the first night in Sturgis, as it was getting dark I urged dad to saddle up so we can make the 30-45 some minute ride back to sis's house. Nope. He was having way too much fun watching the people. Not just the babes with painted on clothes. It was the whole craziness that some people were displaying. Around 1 or so we headed out. There is a small bar just around the corner from my sister's house. The only time we had a beer was just before we turned in for the night. So we headed out. As we rode through Rapid City, dad had to go around me. So I then followed him. He never likes to lead. At night he did it so he could just watch my taillights. He went from 75 mph to finally around 40 or so as we exited off the highway at Box Elder. I could see him flashing each turn signal on and off and he honked his horn. He was trying to find the hi-beam switch. We pulled up to the bar and he came off the bike and I thought he was going to punch me. He was truly pissed. I barley got my helmet off and he was totally in my face. I never thought I would fight pops but it was about to go down. I calmly stated that is my point. I can't always lead. So the next night as evening approached, dad looked up at a streetlight was buzzing as it was coming on and he looked at me and said "Ready?". I smiled and said sure pop's, and I'll buy our first round.

I hope you have a blast.

I hope that those going have nice weather and a safe trip. I rode out there every year from '99 to '13. I traveled with a group from the twin cities. We always camped, first at Mountain View in Spearfish and around '05? we started camping at Wyatt's Hide-a-way outside of Belle Fourche. I really enjoy riding in the Black Hills, but lately I can't deal with the crowds. I'd rather go a few weeks after the rally, or several weeks before...
