I have an STX38 with a bad transmission when I put it into any forward gear it makes a rapid clunking sound from the transmission and wont move it catches everyone in a while and will inch forward but thats all,it goes in reverse fine. I have read several threads about problems with these trans axles is this a fairly easy problem to fix? Or I have a John Deere 180 that a kid cut the deck linkages off and spray painted it to make it a racing mower but never modified the drive train. Would I be better to swap that trans axle into the STX38 instead of repairing the one in it now or can that even be done? I think it wouldn't require any modification to anything since they are both 5 speeds with separate clutch and brake pedals.
Thanks

Swapping out the rearend/trans might not work. The shift pattern might not be the same, so it becomes difficult and a little dangerous. We did that with an STX, the neutral safety switch worked, the tranny was actually in reverse. Ran up my son's leg aways before we got it shut down.

I wouldn't think the shift pattern would be a problem with these since the shifter is on the right fender on both with the gears in the same spot.
