Hi folks,
Due to a question in another thread, I'm putting this "status report" up here for those so patiently waiting for a loooong overdue backrest for their set of forks. Here's the Reader's Digest summary:
I have designed and built a prototype backrest and installed it onto my own personal set of forks. The mounting approach involved drilling 3/8" holes through the frame tubing. Although this passed stress analysis with flying colors, my "real world" impression was not one of enthusiasm. Still, I've been trying to beat the heck out of it at every opportunity, which hasn't been very many unfortunately. The prototype has been working fine so far.
I worked up an alternate mounting scheme, which is much improved - and very easy to install. I also refined the design of the backrest frame to make it (guess) as lightweight as possible for it's strength (capable of a 1000 lb vertical load and weighing 23-25 lbs).
The challenge has become finding an economical way to produce the frame in relatively low quantities. Since my manufacturing time is maxed out with current demands, I sent the design out for quotes to have the parts cut. The cost returned was horrifying; far above expectations. I refuse to promise a solution to all of you and then have to come back and charge through the nose for it. So, at present, I am having to go back and perhaps streamline the design to get the cost down. I am also looking at ways to expand internal capabilities (bigger space) to bring in the making of these parts in house, though this alone takes time.
Progress is ongoing, albeit slow given the resources available. I am aware that there are many people interested and I realize that for some a backrest is an inherent component. I encourage anyone who is anxious to keep bugging me. Don't be bashful. Use threats if you like. But I'll tell you now that it is at the top of my priority list and will remain there until finished. I am very grateful for everyone's participation and do not want anyone to be disappointed. Thanks for your understanding and patience.
