So, on Easter weekend we had a big do here at The Yellow House. Many friends, lots of food and drink, games, etc. A wonderful weekend was had by all – with one minor exception: Future SIL went through yet another rotten plank on the exposed side of a partially covered deck.
As a quick refresher, we bought this place about three years ago and it had sat empty for something like 18 months.
The deck is/was ~34’ wide, 8’ out covered, another 8’ past that uncovered. It sat on the ground, and I’m not entirely convinced all the lumber used was ground contact. There were rotten spots in it when we bought the place, and several more have appeared with use.
This is an issue.
Aside from the kitchen, this part of the house gets the most use. When we have friends over we always seem to end up there late into the night as drinks are consumed and tales told. There is a fire pit in the back yard, and the kitchen is just off the deck, so there’s lots of back and forth in that area.
So…
Phase 1: Remove old deck.
We snapped a line across where I wanted it to end and cut down it with a circular saw and nice new sawsall, then began tearing off the planks.
Note rot on stringers.
Stringers then cut/removed. Note: All C&D waste was cut to less than 5’ for handling reasons (I use the Subaru as a pick-up when needed).
First scab w/demo mostly done. I wanted to get something on the face before I had to knock off for a work run and wanted at least something to support the ends of the planks. I left the rest since I was very much playing it by ear, and leaving some amount of remaining wood in good shape was still in play as an option
Phase 2 continues below.
