I'm sorry Guys, but I've never heard of one of these, and/or what they do! Can I get some basic, basic information of their application? Are they a Heating/Cooling devise? Cost per CU FT of air space? Are they a primary Heat Source, or supplemental? Is there a short read that I could find if this might be applicable to my Summer House? I wandered over to WSA, but still have questions. Any, 'Fifth Grade Primer' would be appreciated.......... ~"Scotty"...................Like the TV Show, "Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader"............I guess I'm about to find out........~S

All a/c units have 2 coils (heat exchangers). The inside coil (evaporator) absorbs heat and the outside coil (condensor) rejects the heat....basically moves heat from one area to another.A window unit is no different but has the 2 coils inside one cabinet. The mini-split system is basically a very small "central" type system without ductwork. Almost like they take a window unit and divide up the 2 small coils to their own separate cabinet. But...in the process of doing this they have added some features that make'm more efficient. It is very rare to find a window unit with an energy efficiency ratio (SEER) of more than 12. A mini-split starts at 13 and goes all the way up to 23. This EER or SEER (standard energy efficiency ratio) means how many BTU's output per watt of input you can expect. These mini splits can also be bought in a heat pump configuration. A heat pump reverses the refrigerant flow to where the inside coil becomes the heat rejector,etc.
They have developed these mini-splits to where you can now add additional indoor coils to one outside coil....up to 4 zones. The compressors are run through inverters to allow it to have an infinite rpm's up to about 3400 in order to match the load demand...or how many zones are calling for cooling/heating.
This zone control makes a "system" more energy efficient simply because you are only cooling areas that are needed and no loss to ductwork leakage etc.
They can be a primary cooling source, but hesitate to call them primary heating source as they do not have defrosting capabilities like a larger central type system does

edit to add....I use window units as an example ,but the mini-splits can be sized up to around 3 tons in the multi-zone configuration. This can take care of around 16-1800 sq ft. They can be mounted on the wall and ceiling-->both flush and surface mounted

You seem to know what's going on with these systems. My 100-year-old house has no central air (other than the air blowing through the cracks in the house). I have access through the attic to run ducts for the three upstairs bedrooms and bathroom. I have no access from the attic to the first floor to run ducts, and I have no access from the first floor to the second floor to run ducts. My main use for this is cooling the second floor, not heating. Do you think it would be more efficient to run one of the four zone "mini-splits", or a more traditional central air system with duct-work to all of the rooms? Is four zones the highest number they offer in these systems?

I have heard of these systems before but I thought they were more expensive and didn't realize you could set up several zones for them.

Andy,how many rooms and approximate size are we talking about? How much room in the attic and how large is the access? Altho I've never installed this type,there is an inside evaporator mini-split coil that has room to install an additional small duct run for say...a small bathroom or closet with exposed outside walls.This of course,will give you more than 4 room temperance.

Thanks Arlen!

Every once in awhile ,I think about selling out. The pressure of having to do it all can be overwhelming sometimes. I get to thinking it would be nice just to be able to concentrate on fixing stuff.....not chasing down money owed,etc. The company I worked for years ago, Berg , was bought out by Johnson Controls I believe.
