Well, you know, security issues and all. He obviously misses his tractor. I would.

What I'm hearing is that the beatdown Bama gave ND in the BCS championship game led to the decision to "step down."

If I posted one of my highly Politically Incorrect comments about the Pope calling it quits; I'd probably be banned from GTT.
While I had a very topical, interesting and I'm sure humorous reply ready and my cursor poised over the "Submit Reply" button yesterday... I too chickened out. And, if I'm not mistaken, I feel the wary hand of a "Moderator" hovering about the "Lock Button" at this very moment!:flag_of_truce::laugh:

I clicked on this topic thinking I would read some well thought out comments of his Holiness calling it quits. But I was wrong. For whatever reason, there are some religions that are the brunt of everyone's jokes. I guess it's all part of the "human condition". Maybe beyond any age or health related issues, he may truly feel the pain & suffering that is in this world. The killing, the torturing, the raping & the crimes we committ against each other. The sensless brutality. And for the rest of us, maybe we poke fun at him & others like him, because we really have no true understanding of what it must be like to be a man like him. I do have a sense of humor & try to see the humor that other people see. But this is one time the point of the humor & jokes just don't click with me. This is just my own opinion here, so don't go crazy on me. I really wonder what it must be like to walk in the shoes of the fisherman?

...or it could be some deep mysterious conspiracy since most Popes have died in office, even ones that were ill. So, as a total religious outsider, I just take it as interesting news... something to wonder about being outside the norm of Vatican doings. I am as inquisitive as the next man...

From my viewpoint as a "non-religious-ist" I must make my way in the world without ceremonial "trappings" of anything organized and live by what all great teachers from ancient times have tried to pound into human heads, The Golden Rule.

The Golden Rule interestingly is never questioned, denegrated, re-organized, sected or parsed. The Golden Rule doesn't require any fancy dress or mumbo-jumbo. It can't be denied, never instituted any cruel religious "Inquisitions", never destroyed an entire population of native people for precious metals or conquest. The Golden Rule (as far as I've read) never held mankind hostage in a period called "The Dark Ages". Yes, it has gotten people killed, but never killed anyone.

Personally, I'm interested in religions and how they work psychologically. It makes great reading as to their control of entire populations throughout history. I like their various absolute descriptions of where I can choose to go after my human life is over... IF I belong. So many different Heavens! Today maybe I'm kinda leaning towards the "multiple virgins heaven" a little... but I do know that no one's God no matter who the incarnation may be would ever turn away a "Golden Rule-ist". I feel pretty good about my standing in the human spiritual race and I hope everyone else feels as secure as I do in their own belief.

But, I still think the news of a Pope resigning is pretty weird and therefore interesting, and I think it has the attention of many who wonder along with me. No offenses are intended to anyone regardless of race, creed or religion, it's just "news to me".

....and I fully respect your Golden Rule position. Unfortunately the keepers of the golden rule are vastly out-numbered. Perhaps maybe that's why we turn to organized religions. I don't know. I'm not smart enough to answer the question. But I will say this, I believe that the most dangerous threat in the world today stems from organized religions. Certainly not all of them, but a few of them out there that have more strength than the military mite of many countries. And to conquor what, and at what cost.
We are now in the new "Dark Ages". History does repeat itself. I'm not the one to guess at the Pope's decision & his reason "why". Who really knows the politics behind it. Someday we will know, but not for a long time. But it dosen't matter.

As far as religions go, being a catholic is not a easy matter. It's not a religion where one gets to pick & choose the different parts & teachings while discarding what he or she does not like. That's what I find so interesting about his decision to leave while still alive. For the past nearly six hundred years no Pope has ever left the job alive. Just seems so strange, at least to me.

I don't necessarily agree with everything you said in your post, but I tip my hat to you, in the way you said it. There is noting in your post that is offensive or deserves editing. :yahoo:

I pretty much think "ours" is the best religion. You do what you know, trust in your beliefs and try to do good as you can and you will qualify for a reward in the end.

I think another thing we can agree on is the total undeclared war against religion of all types afoot in this country. Atheists and socialists want God OUT of everyone's life. They are unreasonable, unbending people in some very covert groups who will subvert religious cultures at every turn. They will also use them one against another for their own designs. The current PC gun control topics lately have taken the heat off religion for a while, but the reductions of other's freedoms are always in the back of a socialist's mind.

For all of us who love "history", today's happenings are just another chapter in Mankind's fruitless search for what and who he is. Individual perception is individual reality and what a vast bunch of "strange" realities we have today... and had yesterday and on back in time. Humans will always be humans and neither The Golden Rule nor any religion will ever change that. Forever and ever somebody will always want your goods and will find a way to get your stuff away from you. The human race is nothing more than one big Internal Revenue Service!

"Friends, Romans, freemen and citizens... I as your Emperor deign that you will turn in all your swords, scabbards and shields including any war trophies and any concealable pocket scroll operners over the length of my regal pinky. The legionaires will pass among you to collect all your sharp goods for which you will be compensated by possibly not being tossed into the arena with my new pack of lions this coming holiday. As always your cooperation is not optional in our Empire and this is really not a tax! Thank you my subjects and good night."

"Stay tuned for totally complete analysis of the Emperor's comments right after this brief message from your local 'Togas 'r Us' bazaar near you..." (cue snappy toga sale jingle...)

Well said HydroHarold.

A good friend of mine is a devout Catholic and he's commented that my cosmology of JTPYO (Just To Piss You Off) is so simple and universal that it can be written on the smallest Post-it note and doesn't require grand edifices and bureaucratic hierarchies to minister to the faithful.

Q: Why does anything bad happen to you?
A: Just To Piss You Off.

By the way, a lot of people aren't aware of this; but Thomas Jefferson rewrote the bible to remove the supernatural mumbo-jumbo and superfluous language that obfuscated the teachings presented in the book. I learned about that in a Smithsonian magazine article from sometime in the 1980's.

Hi- No offense taken, even though I am of the faith. I just did not think his quitting would bring off humor remarks, only because its a job that has room for only one applicant & usually that one applicant has worked all there life to get there. Don't worry about it, I know you & the others meant no harm. Thanks

That IS one thing everyone in the world has in common:mocking: Pretty much everyone on the face of this planet is a certain religion simply because our mommies and daddies taught us a certain one. And precisely why debating religion...any of them... is like having a debate with a concrete pole.

I truly appreciate your position! And as my highlighted sentence of your post describes, one of your religion's most interesting workings begins, the selection process for a sucessor! In times such as these this process must be excruciatingly difficult for the hierarchy of the church to decide. Personally, I hope it's someone that the younger generations can truly relate to and understand as the world will be influenced by what they come to accept as guidelines for their lives. Times are tough enough living in the world today, but as it is moral judgement is more challenging then ever.
