Hi,

I am trying to get some information relating to the thread ID and size for the handbrake adjustment hole on my JD2040s / 2140 tractor, as I need to put a hydraulic fitting into it to accept a return pipe from one of my implements. I know the plug is a taper thread, but that is all I know currently:

784002

If anyone knows what it is, then I would appreciate some input here.

Kind regards

Jay

JD parts says it's a 1" pipe plug.

Jay, Looking at your pic, I'd say it is NOT ORFS. An ORFS thread would have a spotface on the casting to provide a suitable seat for the o-ring to seal against. Yours is simply an "as cast" surface.

Whether NPT or NPTF isn't critical. Thread forms are interchangeable, but NPT must have sealant on threads, NPTF should be lubricated. Most hydraulic fittings are NPTF, but you have no way to determine if tapped hole is NPT or NPTF. Get the fitting you need, apply thread sealant and install! Do NOT use teflon tape! Bob

I'd say for that era tractor NPT. Since it will be dump to sump, I would not be too worried about leaks. I would use a paste type "pipe dope" just to seal from water entry.

I agree, do NOT use teflon tape any where on your tractor.
