My hamster is spinning the wheel again. In the Favorite Tools post I mentioned my two post lift. It is great; you place the vehicle between the posts and swing in the lift arms under the frame. Once positioned you lift the vehicle to the height you need. I want to run some wild ideas past you guys and some of you already know where this is going. Have you ever heard of lifting tractors? Do dealers have this ability or do they just crawl under them like I am doing now? Am I completely off my rocker? Strike that, it really does not pertain to this and is a completely different issue. I just think it would be great at times to lift the machine to a comfortable position like the cars (yeah I know my age is showing). And I like working easier and smarter not harder. I could raise it to be able to sit on my work stool and change oils.

Ok, now some details. First the lift is rated for 7000 lbs. and should not be an issue of capacity (at least not for my tractors). I have often thought it would be nice to lift the tractors with the decks on, but am not so sure this would be a big issue with the Deeres (way easy to remove), just an added bonus. It would have been with the Wheel Horses (a necessity).

Next consideration, lift points! First thought was some lift pads under the wheels. I have two issues on this one. First is the height difference off the floor or construction of the pads. Things are going to get big and heavy not to mention storing. I am of the simple and easy theory and nothing about drive-on supports is alluring. I have mulled this over and over and it just does not compute. It was looking like my only option for the Wheel Horses, thus I never did anything. My second issue is the safety concern of strapping or bolting down the unit. Just locking the brakes does not put my mind at rest on this one. Sure would hate to have things go awry here, again more messing around. Another thought on this was to remove the wheels and bolt on adapters. Don’t like it, too much dinking around to just put it on the lift, though it would probably work quite well.

The light bulb went on this morning, now no laughing! What do you guys think about lifting the machines by the FEL brackets? I am thinking the brackets should be designed heavy enough to support at least the front half. They are bolted to the frame. And, I can visualize some simple and effective adapters. I would have nothing to remove, just bolt or slip on. Just swing the lift arms into position and lift. Another option is to bolt a bracket to front frame cross member.

Now for the rear, I have two possible attaching points for the adapters, neither of which I favor one over the other at this point. One is an adapter to the 3pt in its full raised position of course. This would lend it self to the use of the quick hitch. And the other is an adapter off the drawbar. I am not exactly sure how this one would work yet. Any thoughts on this would be well appreciated in terms of one versus the other. I of course am open to other possible solutions.

What ever I do, the same adapters will need to work for both machines.

Well, let me have it. I know there are some that are going to cringe, but I really think this can be done safely. The key is lifting to known structural points that will withstand the weight. Oh, no need to suggest therapy I already know it’s needed.

Sorry for the short story, but I think it is all justified. I think Pete is rubbing off onto me.

Some how I knew you'd be the first to respond to this one, Dave. Actually, I had already seen that one. Not sure if it would adapt to my lift. And not completely convinced i want a drive on style, big and bulky. Hard to handle and store. Help me out here I am a do it yourselfer. But thanks.

Well, my only question is "how useful" do you want this...It would probably be fairly easy to design something small & easily removable to "custom fit" one of your machines using the lift points Brian mentioned, but to fit both your deeres and any other tractors may come in the future might be a tad more difficult.

I would think the best place to lift would be on the front weight bar and the rear axle? Could your lift reach those areas?
The front frame cross member is an option for an adapter. The rear axle is going to need a closer look. I assume you don't like the FEL bracket idea?:unknown:

I don't think so, keep in mind the lift arms are adjustable. I have a lot of latitude with them. The adapters would need to be in their range on either machine.

I cannot tell you if thats safe or not. The FEL brackets should be able to lift the whole tractor, but? How many times have you done a rear wheelie with a load of dirt in the bucket? One would think it would be ok.. I would hate to have something happen to you while trying it.

Where is my head? You can easily pick up the tractor with the FEL via the brackets. I really like this spot. Front problem solved.

Thanks Brian, I am not going to rush into anything. This will be well thought out and constructed.

I've used the FEL to bring up the front. I always put jack stands underneath after lifting. That way if something goes wrong, it doesn't spread. I'd hate to be working under there, have someone come along and lean on the lever, and then get squished. If I get under my MX5 rotary cutter, I support it two instead of letting the hydraulics hold it up.

For those some reasons, I'd not rely on FEL arms (or any other hydraulic cylinder) to support a tractor while it was being worked on..

Gotta tell you Randy, I'd love to have some of your problems . How to adapt my service lift so it can hold my tractor. Life is good.

Randy:

You're far from being off your rocker to want to use your lift to make working on your tractors easier.

If I had a shop, I looked into a 4-post Bend-Pak that could handle all my vehicles, Accord to F-250 and tractor. Since I don't do brake work, the inconvenience of the 4-post is a moot point for me.

I've thought about making a set of these from steel as I can't bring myself to pay $500+ for four of EPS cubes. http://www.discountramps.com/wheel-stands.htm

I don't see a problem using the front crossmember closest to the front axle; but an adapter connected to the 3PH or drawbar is a bit scary to me.

That is why I want to use my car lift. It has built in safety stops already to go.

Problem is, that now makes two of us. Yeah, I like doing things the easy way instead of the hard way.

Yeah, I have come to that conclusion as well. Thanks.

Update

I finally got around to putting the 2305 in the air (someone wanted pictures of the underside). It worked pretty well, though I think I will probably make an adaptor for the rear wheels later. My 2520 will definetly need an adaptor before its wheels leave the ground. I am really going to like this when it comes time to change the hydraulic oil and filter. :yahoo:

Randy, your shop is better equipped than a lot of dealer's service departments, that I have seen. Very nice. Also cleaner.

Looks real good, Randy. What I wouldn't give to have a lift....

That should make the hideous chore of changing hydraulic oil and filter much easier. I want one!
