I'm my wonderful experience of searching out the perfect trailer, I am starting to get hung up on axles. Nothing seems to be made in the US anymore and the quality of components can be questioned. Lets say most things are equal and compare the types of axles.

Here is the little I know about these types of suspension. Lets try to expand and get more info.

Slipper Springs - Seems to be on every trailer I look at that is 12K or 14K. Every trailer sales guy says they are the best, but reading, these springs seem to be the ones with the most complaints. In reading, they are crazy noisy, very harsh unloaded, and tow horrible. With that said, they seem to be the easiest to maintain and replace.

Shackle (eye) Springs - These seem to be popular on the smaller trailers. The complaints are that the bolts wear out in the shackles. Not many people talk about them.

Torsion - Some people think these are the best thing since sliced bread and others are haters. Most agree that they will last as long as they are not overloaded. You have to keep your trailer level when towing or you could overload an axle. The axles do not share the weight. The best unloaded and loaded ride out of all of them. BUT, you have to replace the whole axle when they wear out. They are also the most expensive.

The upper end trailer I am looking at is a torsion system. I am unsure if thats what I want or not....


Lets try to get as much info on these types of suspensions here that we can.

That was not meant as info! :lol: I have no real world experience with slippers. I have had torsions on two of my enclosed trailers and one set of shackles. My boats have always beel shackles.

Honestly, I have no clue what to buy. :cray:

I have never heard that term "slippers" used before about springs?

Slipper springs are called that because they only are connected to the trailer by one eye. The other end of the spring slips on the trailer frame. Diagrams of shackle and slippers are attached.

I have never seen those before...interesting. I only have experience with shackle type then.

I have had them all and slippers are my least favorite, the shackle type with equalizers on a tandem are fine especially if you tow with different vehicles with slightly different hitch heights.

The torsion axles on my enclosed car hauler have been trouble free and ride well under all conditions.

Really if the T6 has torsion axles just adjust to fit your truck for a level ride and you should be good to go. I pull trailers all the time including the boat and have had no problems with any of the axle/spring setups. Most problems have been trailer tires, never the wheels or axles.

Thanks Steve. I am planning on doing the custom trailer at this point and I will request shackle springs.

Hi Brian any pics of your progress? I know I am probably late but did you decide to put a "walker" in-between the axles? On a double axle don't forget the toe is offset on each axle to make it track straight. Happy building...
