Using a winch

Has anyone on the list ever put a 12V winch onto their tractor? If so how did you mount it?

I have seen some in the old days mounted to the front of the tractor just behind the weight bar. What I see on many cars are winches mounted to receiver hitches so they can go in front or in the back of the vehicle.

With that said, be careful! There is not much room to hide on a tractor and if the cable were to break, you would be pulling right back at yourself. When I am usning mine on my jeep I am always ducking under the window so if something happens it will not take off my head.

Good advice Brian!:thumbup1gif: Most people don't realize this till it is too late.
Winching

Like Brian mentioned, the 2" receiver is a popular option for mounting those portable winch applications. I've used Warn winches for many years on my Jeeps. Cable failure is a good reason why they give you a long operator control lead to stand clear of the cable. Warn has a nice booklet at their web site about winching. A mid cable rug, blanket or coat will take up a lot of energy, from a cable failure, fairly well. There is a lot to know about proper winching. Frankly, this is the first interest I have ever seen about mounting a winch on a tractor. I'd be interested to see what the final product looks like. Good luck :)

This link may provide some ideas.......

Thanks for the feed back everyone. I cut down trees etc and it could be real handy at times to have a winch to pull them out of places where it is tough to cut them up. That is my whole thought on the matter and of course having a winch can open up other possibilities as well.

I have to say that I did not know what seems to be from some of your responses that there can be a lot of failures with winches. I agree you would not want to be close if the thing breaks under load.

The thread given where the one user set it up with a 2" receiver was really nice. That would probably be the way to do it. On the 990 I have acquired I can see that it has a front area to hook to I am just not sure yet what is the aspect of where you can hang the weights and what is part of the 300CX FEL. That I have to decipher.

Maybe the thing to start with is setting up the rear and then going from there. It is on a list of projects which they all take time. Right now I am working on the bucket for the BH to weld some extra steel to it since my first project with it will be working in some very rocky soil. When I get it done I will post some pictures.

Thanks again.

112 v winch on tractor

hi,, i had a Warn 6000# on a Case 255, mounted behind the grill guard. I used it to drag logs out of tight spots.. I also had an A-frame gin pole for pulling 1" drill pipe for water well drilling.. It was not strong enought to break the wire cable, it would stall first, so I never had problems with breaking the cable..
I mounted it just far enough forward to allow the hood to open. My JD 4210 grill guard and hood , battery, latch, etc are a problem now, so i havent mounted the same winch on the 4210.. Maybe a receiver hitch would be the way to go on that, I will have to study some more on it.. or I could ask obummer for his help.
haha
