2012 - 1023 e 133 hours, 54 inch mower and front attach snowblower.

I mow around two acres, takes a couple hours. Halfway through I felt a good amount of heat on my back and when I got off to inspect I touched the rear diff and it was too hot to hold even for a couple seconds. No leaks and everything was as it should be for fluids. I've never noticed this before, so any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Although I am not an expert on this subject.... When I Snow blow, I noticed the same thing except for the heat. Snow melt was just dripping off the rear diff. Guess it does get hot under normal use.

It's not uncommon for the hydraulics to get upwards of 100* above the ambient temp. Since the rear end is the hydraulic tank, it will get pretty warm. Not 100* above ambient, but I wouldn't think 150* would be abnormal, especially during mowing in the summer heat. Around 120* is very uncomfortable to the touch, but can be done for a few seconds. Anything hotter and won't let you put your hand on it for very long.

Do you have a temp gun? If so, can you tell us what temp you're getting and where you measured it?

Does the fluid look or smell funny? Did you hear any strange noises? Was your rockshaft lever at full up?

Sorry for so many questions, but it'll help us narrow it down much quicker.:good2:

"Soon As" my tractor gets out of the shop, I'm going to try my heat gun as suggested. I really don't suspect anything out of the ordinary. Kinda like an automotive auto transmission fluid I would gather? Runs through the radiator for additional cooling. Heat being created by use or a PTO engagement. :usa

No temp gun. Didn't hear any noises and no smells. Fluid looks fine as well. It just seemed a lot hotter than I ever remember it being because I've never had cause to check anything down there before while mowing. It isn't something I ever think about, but the heat coming off the machine was unlike any I've noticed before and it grabbed my attention right now. I may need to get a temp gun though. Rock shaft lever WAS at full up. I mow one rough stretch and keep it at max height for that. Thanks for the replies!

OK, armed with that info, I think your rockshaft may be causing the relief valve to lift. This will cause a lot of heat pretty quick. Here's a quick test. Go out and start your tractor. At idle raise your rockshaft as far as it will go. Did you hear a strange noise, maybe a squeal when it reaches the top?

You weren't holding the rockshaft lever in the up position were you?

No sir, was not holding the lever up. It always makes the same noise when lifted to the top, then I stop raising it. Easy to tell when it's all the way up, and nothing out of the ordinary just now when I lifted again. It's probably nothing, but I will pay close attention to it the next time I mow. Thanks to all!

ALWAYS check the hydro cooler in front of the radiator for blockage. That could also up the fluid temp a great deal.

Agree with checking the cooler plus cleaning the front grill off.. if temp goes to high it will shut the pto off. At least on my old 1026r it shut the mmm off while I was mowing some 3-4' tall grass a couple months ago.

I've kept a check on the pump using a heat gun. It will get upwards of 180* in 90+ degree weather. That is hot to the touch fo sho

This is along the same lines of the OP problem I believe. I dont mean to horn in on your thread,but my problem could be related to yours. I dunno.
Last weekend, at the deer lease, I was moving alot of dirt reshaping the campgrounds. I had the box blade on with rippers almost fully extended...hard pack dirt with lots of roots. RPMS up around 2500,using the front end loader a bunch too. I noticed a few times when I had the BB raised all the way up, engine at idle, not moving, it felt like the BB was falling a little bit,then bumping up against the stops....but doing it quickly and with a regularity. Could it have been the fluid being hot? or something out of adjustment? If I lowered the rockshaft a tad, it would stop. btw: I have power beyond on the back.

I think yours might be a symptom of low fluid level. My 1026r does this in the winter when the fluid is cold, but once warmed up it stops. I have noticed the hydro fluid expands and contracts quite a bit due to outside air temps.
