My manual says a single weight oil can reduce consumption and so mentions SAE 30 or 40; however, just talked to the dealer today and he says what's in it now (only bought it back in September and used just twice so far) is 10W-30..so he suggests staying with that. Mentioned that single weight is only for engines that don't have a filter (?) Any other suggestions? Just so I use what is best.

In looking back on my earlier posts, I also noticed that it was suggested to do the initial break-in oil/filter change at 8 hours - something about the recent manuals having been changed to 100. Manual also refers to initial break-in transaxle oil/filter change at 50, but then every 200 thereafter. Are these intervals ok or have some also been modified to a less frequent interval from that of previous manuals? Another question that could arise from this discussion might be - has some modification been made to the engine / transmission that results in not needing to change as often?

What climate does you tractor live in? A straight weight oil would only work if it was warm out.

Zone 6A....eastern PA....I always used SAE 30 in my CC in temps ranging from 90 down to 20 (also plowed snow). The JD 590 will only be used, however, for mowing - so basically warmer weather but also into the fall (until the mowing season ends...has been getting longer on both ends compliments to global warming).

A straight 30 would prob be ok in that operating range, but if it were me, I would probably just use the John Deere synthetic 0w40 plus 50. That’s what I pretty much run in everything (compliments to global cooling).
I didn’t see in the manual where it says to use a straight weight oil. They are all multi grade oils on the chart.

I'm in SE PA so I have the same climate as you. Straight 30W is not what you want to use. The chart below is right out of your X590 manual. All that stuff about oil consumption is mostly BS. I have an Ariens with a single cylinder B&S that I use as a mail getter year round and I've ran 0W-30 and 5W-30 synthetic with no oil consumption. On my X500 which sees usage all year except in the dead of winter I use JD's 10W-30. I'm at 270 hours and it has never used a single drop of oil. 10W-30 is a good oil blend for the climate we see here in PA.

In this instance your dealer is correct. 10W-30 dino oil would be the best blend for your climate. Although I never heard anyone ever relate oil viscosity to whether or not the engine had an oil filter. Seems like apples to oranges to me. If you don't have a filter then just change the oil more often.

There is still no explanation as to why JD removed the recommendation for the initial oil/filter at 8 hrs. Funny thing is that Kawasaki still recommends the 8 hr initial change in their OEM engine manual. I change my X500 engine oil/filter every 25 hrs. and I use JD's TurfGard 10W-30. That amounts to two oil changes per season which for a small engine is not excessive. Needless to say there have been ZERO modifications to the engines or transmissions which would warrant the changes in the manual. Either it is just a typo or text omission or JD is just trying to lower the perceived cost of ownership. My engine oil is always very clean and when I changed my transaxle fluid at 50 hrs and 200 hrs it was perfectly clear. Other than the controversial initial 8 hr change I would go by what is in the operator's manual.

Are you using oil?

If you are find the chart in your manual like what is shown above. Use the oil with the highest numbers that are recommended. If you don’t use any stay with lower numbers.

If burning Oil and your choice is 10w30 or 0w40 use 0w40 as it stay thicker at high temps.

I own a 580 and used the best SYNTHETIC 5W30 I could buy, replacing the oil and filter at 50hrs. No need to replace at 8hrs.

5W30 synthetic.

The X580 uses a Kawasaki FS730V engine. The OEM Kawasaki manual specifies an initial oil change at 8 hrs. This applies to all of the small Kawasaki engines. It remains a mystery why JD removed it from their manuals when the company who built the engine still recommends it.
