Thought I would start a thread about what you did on your property, farm or ranch today.
Maybe there’s a thread that already exists. I'm sure someone will let me know.

Id love to see what other people are up to and exchange ideas.

Speaking of new trees, I planted this maple last fall.
Seems the top isn’t budding out.

Does that mean the top is dead ?
I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to trees.

It's not looking too good. I'd wait it out before doing anything because transplanting that size tree is a pretty big shock to the tree. I'd guess some of the roots didn't survive and that's limited the growth at the top. The good news is maples are pretty hardy and it may survive although with a bit of a different shape.

Maybe you can find some type of food that will help it recover.

SIde note: has anyone ever seen a good tree spade for a subcompact 3pt? I'm just looking to transplant 1-2 gallon trees, not big ones. My land borders a nice woods and I have "unlimited" access to 1-4' high saplings I would like to move around my lawn. The spades may not be reasonably priced for what I want, but I'm still interested in at least seeing one. All the tree spades I see for sale are for 10-20 gallon tree balls or similar.

Went back to the Tree nursery, they think it's beyond recovering the top.
They warrantied it out.

They will be back out this fall to plant a new one.

Only the labor to plant a new one is not included in the warranty and the labor is 60% of the cost of the tree.
I learned that your supposed to water a new tree, year around, even when it has gone dormant in the winter.
Which I have never heard of watered anything in the winter months Dec-Feb.

I had watered it last fall, immediately after planting till sometime in December when the tree had gone dormant.
Then started watering again this spring when I saw some Leafs starting to come out.

Hmm... that's in Canadian $ so... $6700 USD. Yep, that's well outside of my budget. But cool, never the less. Thank you for the video!

Environmentally I’m not a big fan of plowing but sometimes you need to. Nonetheless I do enjoy a nicely turned field and the smell of fresh dirt. Classic rock on the radio and black smoke. Got to love it.

I would like to have started in hay but there was so much moisture in the air and on the ground that I didn't see getting it dried before the next series of showers. Checked over the hay equipment, made a bottle holder for our bottle calves, made a hutch for one calf and mowed around the edge of the hay field with the Bushhog to make sure no debris had snuck into the field. The tractor tires were getting wet at 2:00 in the afternoon. Possibly the hay would have dried with enough runs with the tedder but I hate starting the season with wet hay.

Oh well, we wanted to put new blades on the mower anyway and those just came in late in the day to the dealership. I placed the order at least a month ago but something went astray hence the delay in getting them.

I ordered barrel dollies from U-Line and they arrived yesterday. Of course both barrels were full so I filled the tractor and three 5 gallon cans to lighten them up a bit. I then pumped fuel from one barrel into the other and was able to lift them into the dollies. I have now have two 30 gallon barrels of diesel that I can easily move around in the shop.

Remember Miracid? Best thing ever for pine trees, but I haven’t seen it for decades. Eliminated By the nanny state dumb down.

Got a spell of clear weather so cut the hay on Wednesday. Teddered it on Thursday. Today, (Friday) raked and baled it. Photo is the grapple staking hay bales on the wagon. Few years ago, couldn't get any help stacking the wagon so bought a grapple & accumulator. Even with the machinery, today was a long day (into the night)

Buckwheat is in the ground, we rotate our potatoes in this field, we use buckwheat for soil nutrition.

First mow of the season. I should have dethatched and swept the bad areas before cutting. I did it right after I took the pic and it looks better now. Just need some spot treatments with some seed/fertilizer. The bad areas are where snow was piled over winter.
