Here's a brief blog post regarding some of the main differences between the John Deere X7 Series garden tractors and 1 Series sub-compact tractors. If you are in the market, then hopefully this gives a little insight between the two. It's certainly not all-inclusive and just hits some of the highlights. Thanks!

You still trying to sell the 1 Series sub-compact . It not as good as a mower tractor and looks kind of cheap ,
Is it made in Japan ??

The 1 series is a better all around machine but the 700 series may mow better? But I don't own a 700 series so I can't say for sure. The engines in the 1 series is a Yanmar made in Japan but the tractor is made in Augusta Georgia I believe.

These two series really are completely different machines.

I have the x739. I chose it because of maneuverability. The AWS should not be understated as this is an important feature on "technical" lawns with lots to mow around, with blind corners and dead-ends. Super fast, almost zero-turn like, grass cutting machine. It also will plow snow sideways and you won't lose steering when the front gets light because you can steer with the rears. It is a snow moving beast. AWS is not an option on the 1-series. The X is also a little lower to ground. Not as low as I'd like. The old 400 series was better in this regard. But still the X739 fits better under low limbs and big shrubs. And a little less likely to roll over on a slope. The HDAP tires are way better for general use than R1, R4, or turfs, and not an option on the 1-series (I don't think).

The 1-series is a good choice when you want a hybrid between a tractor and a mower. However these sub-cuts are quite versatile and do fill a niche for the smaller property owner who only needs light duty loader/3PH work. The only advantage of the 1-series is the loader and bigger 3PH implements (and selection). Otherwise, there is an X7xx that fits almost any other need just as well, or better for some tasks.

The 1-series is a better value, as you get more for your dollar, in a general sense.

I have bigger tractor too. My 3300 lb tractor (tractor only) is about 1 size up from the 1-series (Kioti CK25) and my X739 will plow circles around the CK when working around cars, house, garage, etc. It's amazing how fast it is. Now long straight-line plowing, the CK would do better, maybe. For mowing the CK (and the 1-series) has no chance. With the X there is very little trimming. Moves fast. Turns on a dime. Pushes just as large of a mower deck as any machine of its HP.

The X AWS really has no peers for what it is and does. No one makes anything quite like it.

Just my 2 cents.

I have mowed with a x590 for close to 8 yrs , now a x738 (140hrs) for past 2 yrs. I will say the new 54" on the x7XX will throw the grass. This is my SIL fathers machine that I have used , eats the gas about 5gal in 3-3 1/2hr of mowing. Another note on mowing, both machines WILL tear up you lawn . Like the hdap tires better than R4 and for me will NEVER own a machine with turf tires, FIL did that trick about 39 yrs ago wore chains on this machine till he replaced the tires about 10 yrs ago now no chains except in the winter months.

I've owned a 2210.2305 , 1026 and 1025r (3yrs old 375hrs) over the past 18 yrs . mowing the same yard with 2305 takes maybe 3 gal of diesel.

I like both machines , but for me the 1series out shines in more ways than fuel.

Agree subs have the ROPS and can be a pain. but truthfully can't tell any difference on a hill for low center of gravity. IMO the big feeling is you are setting higher on a 1 series and that is what most people feel and that is what they dislike. But machines have the same size tires, so how is the x a better low center of gravity. OH so setting higher up so it will tip over easier, yes it will but the reason is using FEL , no ballast and bucket to high in the air and user going to fast or runs over a hump or in a dip.

Another reason 1 series shines L and H range, and 3pt included, plus rear PTO with purchase along with diesel.

As stated above the 54" for x series IMO outshines the one on the series 1 ,, unless they are using the same deck on the new ones. :dunno::dunno:
but mowing in high and damp grass the diesel , mows with no hesitation.

Just my 2 cents after using both machines every week .

This is a good comparison and subject. I found the summary on your site well written. If only you had a diesel x700 to compare along with showing the 1-series without the loader.

I think there is a definite market for the x700 series. To a lot of suburban/city people seeing the 1-series on the lots with the leaders attached is intimidating to some of them.

Many many years ago I was faced with the same decision that is shown here. I ran heavy equipment and farm tractors most of my life. I also had a small mowing business most of my life. At one point when I had my 332 I was ready to upgrade and visited my dealer. I went right for the x700 diesel (don’t know the model numbers). This is before the zero turns started becoming popular.

My dealer steered my right to the 2210 which is the predisessor to the 1-series. I think it was Deere’s first sub-compact diesel with this configuration. He eventually talked me into it but I still thought the loader was kind of a joke. I can eat crow now after that tractor and my present 2520 after 11 years.

But....I am considering a dedicated mowing machine once again. I had a 757 zero turn for a few years but had to sell it when I got sick. Have been mowing with the 2520 since which has been fine.

When thinking about a dedicated mowing machine I automatically look at a zero turn again. But at this point in my life ride quilaity is a huge factor. The zero turns I have used just ride rough on my mowing areas. Plus I need a relatively heavy machine due to the hills I have. So when it comes time I will certainly consider an x700 series with a diesel of course. Ride quality is more important to me now than cut quality or speed. It will be very interesting to find which machine will ride better - a zero turn or an x700 series.

I didnt buy a 7 series I bought a 5 series but


I wanted a 1025r badly but after seeing the mowing quality of a friend's mower I knew I wasnt going to be happy with it.

I picked up a brand new x570 and a used kubota sub compact with a loader and deck for less than I would of paid for a new 1025r.

Had enough cash left to buy a new 12x20 garden shed.

Mowed with a X590 for 8 years ? Hasn't even Been Out for more than 2 & 1/2 years or did You mean a X595?:bigthumb:

Except for Deere & Simplicity the day of the super Garden tractor is about to set. To a Point the Sub Compact is the new Garden tractor. Take Massey-Ferguson and New Holland they actually Market there sub compacts as More of a Garden tractor But especially New Holland. The Kubota BX 1880 is really Kubota's replacement for the G series. Loader on Garden tractors except a for a few Manufacturers were always aftermarket Made. Deere used aftermarket Loaders Until the Introduction of the 44 Loader which they followed on with the 40 & 45 Loader Put Prior to the 44 Loader Deere either Hired Johnson to Make the 20 Loader and Branty to Make the 330 Backhoe and depending On the year they were Marketed either Carried the OEM Name & Number system Or Deere's Number for it. Having to Buy aftermarket is nothing new Simplicity's Legacy XL series Loader and Backhoe Have always Been By Kwik-way and the Previous Legacy series Loader & Backhoe On the 425 thru 455 series the Only choice for a Backhoe was Kwik-way For the X475 thru Current X700 series Your On choice for a Backhoe is Wallenstein and the Current Only choice for a full fledged Loader for the signature series is CTC or Build Your Own from PF engineering or Cad Plans . But the Old 45 Loader Can be fairly easily adapted with Making a different Type of Bolt On sub frame. As Far as Loader Lift Goes You Can get a CTC Or 45 Loader shimmed to almost Lift as Much as a H120 or 120R Loader But the 45 Loader to 36inches will lift 700Lbs without the need of shimming the Valve. It's Only 395Lbs at Max lift height. But In My case I haven't Had to Lift to Many Loads to Max height. If You want to Talk about Digging with the 45 Loader even without a tooth Bar. These size Loader Can Handle it. I dug a trench 3 feet down & 60 feet Long another Member On MTF Dug a Nice trench deeper than the 45 Loader's front Mast's is High and it didn't Take Hans all day either. Would a 1 series be faster? the answer is more than likely! Yes. But this size tractor(X700 series) is More Than capable of getting the Job done even with a aftermarket Loader :bigthumb:

I find this very interesting as I just ordered an x758. Do you think Deere will continue to make the x700 series in the future?

I'm also wondering if the next model of the x758 will be coming out in the next couple years. The x748 was made from 2006-2012. The x758 started being offered in 2013. I guess the next iteration would be a x768? I hope I didn't make a mistake going to the x758. My primary duties are mowing and snow plowing and I plan to keep it for 25+ years.

X748 was considered 2007 thru 2012 model years Introduced at 2006 fall show
X595 was considered 2002 thru 2006 model years
Super garden tractor do sell well for Deere & Simplicity

But the super Garden tractor Market In general has Been replaced By the Sub Compact market

Super Garden Tractors Gone since 2000

Ariens 2003 They dropped there Grand Sierra after 2005 they dropped there Lawn & Garden tractor Line Though for a few years In recent years they contracted Husqvarna to Build Lawn & Garden tractors for sale at Home Depot & Ariens dealers

Cub Cadet(MTD) 2012 was last model year for 3000 series 2000/XT3 series introduced at Fall Dealer show

Gravely G series stopped Production in 2003

Ingersoll Tractor In general is gone You can still get Part & attachments from a distributor The Parent company went defunct a few Years ago CEO had become a Quadriplegic do to skiing accident shortly after Eastmen had bought Ingersoll The Tractors continue for a few years But the sub compact Market really had Taken there niche as well

Kubota stopped Production of the G series In 2006 Came out with the GR series which is a shaft driven Yard tractor with Hydraulic lift and shaft drive for front Mounted Implements( no sleeve Hitch or 3 point hitch Made) the 1860 was really the G series replacement which the 1880 is the current model

Simplicity Legacy XL series clones Under AGCO & Massey-Ferguson AGCO dropped the AGCO Line so the Simplicity Clone Machines ceased about 4 or 5 years ago Massey-Ferguson Dropped the Simplicity Legacy XL Clone But Kept the Simplicity Prestige clone for about another Year Finally all they offered was the Clone of the Simplicity Conquest Until 2017 When they dropped The whole Lawn & Garden tractor Line Limited to dealer stock. SO 4 o5 Years ago In the Massey Line You had to Jump from the Prestige Clone to the sub compact if You wanted there smallest tractor to Take a Loader & a Backhoe & be shaft driven

Toro stopped production of Wheel Horse in general in 2005 Though They Made a special edition garden tractor In 2007 along with with the end of the Wheel Horse 5Xi series being stop By the end of 2006 New Holland didn't have the GT series which was based In the Toro 5XI series They did offer the Belt drive MY series through 2007 which was based on the Wheel Horse 4XT series

When (MTD) Bought Troy-bilt they stopped Production of the shaft driven Troy-Bilt and Bolens Tractors In 2000

White(MTD) Stopped Production of there GT2055 after model year 2000

Yardman(MTD) Stopped Production of there GT2055(White Clone) after model year 2000

The Sub compact Market has really taken over the niche of the Super Garden tractor Lines

As far as there being a X768 I think they Might re-number there series again 2021 or 2022 Might see a re-number before then. But usually Deere Keeps a Line about 10 years Because In 2007 the X700 series was Just the X400 & X500 Heavy Duty series re-Labeled the X700 Ultimate series until 2012 so the Line was there for 10 years 2002 to 2012. The X700 signature series 2013 to Present is almost the same tractor except with a Lighter Frame In key spots compared to the previous Ultimate series. I know at one time Deere considered dropping most the X500 series except for the entry Model and Just Having the X700 series as there Garden tractor Models But the X500 series sells well and so does the X700 series.

The X700 series was redesigned so the Tractor weighed less Than 1000 lbs with out Mowing deck so they would not Have to put ROPS on it as per new Government Reg's as Long as it doesn't actually weigh over 1099Lbs Deere is good Because the X758 weighs 1038Lbs

It's a Big reason besides low sales Numbers that Deere did Not come out with a Diesel AWD/AWS Model no matter what it would have needed ROPS In Europe the X700 series has been replaced By the X900 series and they do have a Diesel AWD/AWS tractor. The X900 series all have ROPS. I bet if they sell well in Europe you Might see they Here in the North America market:bigthumb:

Bottom line if you get a machine and the attachments are available for it to do the tasks you want there is nothing wrong with it. I have a 2002 X585 which morphed into the X700. In my case I mainly used it for mowing and snow plowing which it does a great job of. I really only retired it from mowing because it is getting up there in hours and I wanted something faster. I could also use a bigger machine for FEL work and will likely either go to a 2 or 3 series. Can they run for 25 years? Sure with the proper maintenance. I have had some minor issues over the years. Nothing really costly to address. The most frustrating one being an electrical issue with the dash. That was only frustrating because of dealer incompetence. They were not smart enough to look up that it was a documented known issue. I ended up fixing it myself when I had time. The machine still worked it was just that the gauges would be useless if the PTO was running.

The renumbering really isn't a big deal. If I was looking at buying something, the thought of a renumbering looming wouldn't be enough to make me hold off the purchase. Some people have to have the latest and greatest, that is fine but they are also not the ones talking about running a machine for 25 years like you are.

Really in my mind the biggest reason to jump to 1 Series is if you want a FEL and rear PTO. It just makes sense rather than the options and costs to have those things on a X7xx machine. For me a FEL is a must. Once you have one they are hard to give up. They are so much more handy than a wheel barrow or trailer.
