Will the tractor shortage lead to tractor glut?

8410 Views 49 Replies 31 Participants Last post by  SmokyStart
IMO – A lot of people bought tractors because they were stuck at home, stimulus check in the mail, didn’t have to pay rent because they can’t get evicted, etc., so they had the time and extra cash on-hand to make such purchases (or sign for them). My question is, when things get back to ‘normal’ and people actually have to report in-person for work, pay the rent or be kicked to the curb, and deal with this crazy inflation cycle where everything is costing more, are we going to see a flood of used tractors on the market as these people realize they can’t afford them and, now that they aren’t home as much, have less of a need? Add to that the factories are (or will be) back to running full steam ahead – filling up dealer’s lots. Are we going to see a tractor glut as a result of these events?

I suspect we are going to be seeing a lot of used toys coming up within a year.

Not much of anything avl. in OR.

Zero implements.

Finally a few tiny JD's on the lot.....Nothing bigger than a 2 series...maybe a total of 10 as of last week...High for the last several months.

Same story at the Blue & Orange outlets.

Lots of goofy import EX';s are on the Orange lot....Look like Kubotas but are Not.

I hope there will be a glut of new and used tractors.
Should mean way better discounts/pricing so I will buy another tractor.
I'd want a used low hour tractor...cash waiting!

Is anybody going to the dealerships and hoarding all of the tractors like toilet paper? You know, buying them all?

I doubt that anyone buying tractors during the pandemic is going to need to trade them in anytime soon. Someone in the dealer business (especially used like GWT) may have better insight but I highly doubt that people were buying tractors they couldn't afford.

Remote work is here for the long term and a whole generation of parents just learned first hand how much it sucks to have to rely on public parks and playgrounds for your kids to play on. Even dog owners learned that sometimes dog parks won't be available. I say this because anecdotally I've seen a lot of houses on land in my area sell and almost all of them were bought by families with younger children. Not long after said properties are bought do I see the chicken coups and food plots go in. The homesteading groups in my area have also grown with new members.

Will they be using their tractors as much as they did over the last almost two years? Probably not but I wouldn't be surprised if they hold on to them because they do need their machines to do work.

I doubt you will see a glut of used tractors. Most tractor buyers differ substantially from the average consumer in income, assets, lifestyles and priorities.... and possibly work ethic to if you’re allowed to say that anymore. Years ago we hired a John Deere salesman away from the Deere dealer. He went to work in one of our automotive dealerships. Early on he discovered the ratio of bad credit customers to good ones was way different than what he was a accustomed to selling tractors and implements. He didn’t stick around too long before he went back to the John Deere store. By the time you need a tractor most likely you have your financial house in order. And from what I have read the trend for those that can afford it is to get away from suburbia… And head for more rural areas. The fact that people can and will continue to work from home.... Will make it possible to live in areas that are not necessarily geographically close to their workplace. And last.... The demand for equipment new and used will continue to outpaced by the availability. I think what few repossessions there might be will readily be absorbed into the marketplaces.

here's one outfit who has been doing repos for yrs now. they won't admit it, but a few yrs ago i was going to go look at a gator they had, i got my local salesman to run the serial #--for me-and he then told me they had sold them a few units. i said why did uns sell the used stuff to them, and not just let it sit at the dealer so us cheaper fellas had a chance to buy used instead of new. he said ahh-Jim the boss didn't want the repros to sit on his lot-as he thought that was kinda bad for them. so this outfit i am showing u has really grown over the yrs--they sell trees too. wasn't that big of a place just 4 or 5 yrs ago-now pretty big.2016 JOHN DEERE 4105 For Sale in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania

This describes us. We had been looking for years and finally made the plunge after finding the right property. Sold our HOA neighborhood home for over asking price (bidding war... unsure why!) and moved to the country on acreage for a little more than we sold our home. That home, by the way, had such a small lot that I could mow, edge, weed wack, and hand pick weeds in 30 minutes. As the moving company lady said about that home, "You can't have a good fight or a good time without the neighbors hearing it." :ROFLMAO:

Now we have plenty of space, 13 hens 1 rooster, 3 barn cats, and are looking into pigs/cows. I still work my job, as my wife does, but I do not need nor want a neighborhood. I need my tractor! Now it's just balancing momma's inside projects with the outside projects. Of course, when it's 118 heat index (like this last weekend) and the fields are saturated from recent rain, not a whole lot gets accomplished outside.

Probably not the the higher end JD L&G tractors or bigger SCUT, MCUT, LCUT, tractors. More likely what is sold at big box stores and JD will be of a lower percentage. Just my 3 cents

I think their might be a few more used small tractors in the market from people buying them for home projects that they completed while sitting at home. Now that people are returning to work, they don’t need them or see the cost of maintaining them and choice to sell

Excuse me, but did you just call my tractor tiny? I'm highly offended. My tractor identifies as a sub-compact.

I didn’t know there was a tractor shortage. Unlike car, atv, and utv dealers lots. The ag dealerships seem to still have equipment on there lots. There is a dealership near me that sells jd lawn and garden equipment along with Yamaha , Polaris, and lund. Driving past the place it looks like they only carry Deere. They have nothing else in stock now.

Exhibit A in this area is boats. Sold in record numbers last year, now you're seeing them parked outside houses under sagging tarps.

Hard to say at this moment if compact/utility tractors will start going back. Depends how many people financed themselves to the brink with "low monthly payments!" on everything.

My brother is predicting a huge used RV/Camper availability surge as all the folks who decided "it wasn't for them" sell off their purchases. He's been wanting to upgrade for years and is figuring this might just be the perfect time for a glut of "gently used/used once" units.

Hopefully he finds an honest "Gently used", and not a "Parked on the street for over a year, complete with mice and racoons"!

RVs, like boats above, go bad fast if not maintained and stored properly. They are work, and one doesn't just hop in and go unless you want a vacation you really won't forget.

What I find interesting is how many tractors are being sold by the LS, Kioti, New Holland, etc dealers that aren’t Deeres or Kubotas. Those “second tier” brand compacts are selling out all the time at a few dealers I drive past frequently. Are people buying them because they’re not as expensive in some cases? Because they’re available? Or they just want/need a tractor ASAP?
