With all the reported problems with leaking MFWD axles, wondering why the axles are not vented to relieve pressure?

My 4100 with 904 hours is at a dealer having the leaking front axle seals replaced. (I know the repair is fairly straight forward but 'm too old to mess with it myself anymore.) Anyway, it got me to thinking. These axles are gear boxes. Gear boxes are normally vented...why aren't these axles?

Too lazy / cheap to install vents. My 40 year old LCUT has a vented front axle.

Or...a vent is seen as a liability to allow dirt / water into the axle?

I think your first explanation is probably accurate although a dealer may say the second one.

I will say that I've had vents lock up, especially if they are on machinery that's outside. The rocker cap vent on my Busj Hog is bad about that.

I wonder how many of the leaking axles are cause by bad ballast advice from the dealers?

More likely it NO advice rather than bad advice.
A solution is here.
