I'm a new member. first post on any forum. I have a 2004 x495 diesel tractor that starts very hard when cold (as in not run for 5 hours or so). I have to crank it 5 or six times, letting the glow plugs heat up with each recrank before it will start. Once the tractor is warmed up it starts instantly.

I ohmed the glowplugs and none are open. I put an ammeter in series with one plug at a time and saw roughly 9.5 amps per glowplug but current would ramp down to 7 amps over the duration of the glowplug activation. So I replaced the battery... no change. I swapped the k1 relay and no change. I ohmed the white wire from the relay to the glowplugs and it isn't shorted to ground anywhere.

What should I be looking at next? Appreciate the help. jimbob

Maybe it is not related to the glow plugs and instead is fuel leaking back into the tank via the fuel transfer pump...here are some excerpts from the service manual that might be helpful:

...a few more things that I did not ask above:

  • Is this a new symptom on a tractor you have had for some time, or is this tractor new to you?
  • What is the compression of the engine? Hopefully the air filtration system has been serviced properly and the rings are good...
  • Any possibility of contaminated fuel? Water or algae might make for hard starting...
  • How many hours are on your tractor? Do you have the manuals on this machine?
Sorry for the inquisition -- just trying to narrow things down a bit...

I had suspected fuel early on so I replaced the fuel pump, the fuel shutoff solenoid and the k9 relay. I can feel and hear the solenoid open when I turn on the key so I know the solenoid is opening. jim

I bought the tractor with 800 hours on it in 2011. it has roughly 1000 hours on it now.
I have not checked the compression yet. I'm used to pulling spark plugs to check compression and I'm learning how to work on the diesel
I could have comtaminated fuel. would that only affect cold starting?
I do have the nice fat service manual.

Sounds like you already ensured that you are getting fuel as soon as you crank it -- even cold, but I had to ask. Water or algae in the fuel could cause hard starting but would also show up a low performance/rough running. Has this starting issue been recent?

testing compression on a diesel engine takes special gauges and fittings due to the high compression ratios. I think you can test using the glow plug hole and not have to bleed the injectors, etc.

Your injectors might actually be the root cause of your current issue, but you cannot test those yourself and would need to take them to a diesel shop for test and calibration...as I understand it. I have never been into a Yanmar diesel beyond normal service items as it ran like a clock the whole time I owned it...

The fuel filter is less than a year old and the bowl looks clear.. no water showing up. there is no smoke when the engine is running except during the winter when under lots of power blowing deep snow.

I haven't tried any diesel additives. This cold start problem started to show up intermittently about a year ago... one in 5 starts would require multiple cranking but four of five it would just start right up. in the last three months it is hard to start 100% of the time.

I've used john deere oil and filters and serviced the air filters per the manual.

Looks like I need to find the tools to test the compression. I'll check with the guys at work. Thanks. jim

Since you mentioned that you had the large Service Manual then I expect you have the Operator's manual as well... If that is not the case then perhaps this review of the starting process might be useful. I do recall having read that for those marine Yanmar engines without glow plugs, it is very necessary to use part throttle when starting if the engine has not been run in a while. I would not expect that to be as much an issue with the X495, but because I also had other Deere tractors that specified part throttle to start, it was kind of a built-in habit...

Note that the owner manual procedure does not necessarily expect the engine to start during the first 5 seconds of cranking, but mine always started in the first second or two...

Starting the Engine
NOTE: You must depress brake pedal, or lock park brake, before you can
start engine. Be sure PTO/RIO switch is off.
1. Open fuel shut-off valve.
2. Lock park brake or depress brake pedal.
3. Push throttle lever (A) up to between 1/2 and fast position.
4. Turn key to run position.
5. Check indicator lights:
· Oil pressure indicator light will be ON.
· Battery discharge indicator light will be ON.
· Engine preheat indicator light will come on and go out within
approximately 8 seconds. If engine has been run and then cooled, the time
may be less. Wait for indicator to go out before cranking engine.
6. Turn key to start position:
· Crank engine.
· If engine does not start within 5 seconds, turn key to stop position and wait
10 seconds.
· Crank engine again for 5 seconds.
Repeat this procedure if necessary.
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Unnecessary engine idling may cause
engine damage. Excessive idling can cause engine overheating, carbon
build-up, and poor performance.
7. As soon as engine starts, release key. The key will return to run position
and all indicator lights should be off. If a light does not go off, stop engine
and perform appropriate service.

Idling the Engine
NOTE: Allowing engine to idle for long periods of time will waste fuel and
cause carbon build-up.
1. Adjust throttle lever to slow idle speed.
2. Lock park brake.

Stopping the Engine
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Failure to remove grass and debris from the
engine and muffler areas can result in fires. Grass and debris can collect in
the engine and muffler areas while mowing. When mowing is completed,
clean the engine and muffler areas of all grass and debris.
1. Stop machine.
2. Pull throttle lever down to the slow position.
3. Turn key to stop (Off) position.
4. Lock park brake.
5. Remove key.​

TRY this. Turn your fuel shutoff to the off position when shutting down for the day. Might be able to eliminate / pinpoint a possible fuel suction problem

Jim,

One more thing you might check -- are the valves adjusted to spec? If they are a little tight on the nominal clearances that might cause the compression to be a bit lower when cold and cause the hard starting you are experiencing. Don't know if a carbon buildup from excessive idling would also contribute to leakage past the valves when cold as well -- the heavy black smoke on startup indicated that you are getting plenty of fuel when it does finally light off...

Again, I am no diesel expert and my own X495 always started on the first full revolution of the engine. My only current diesel vehicle is my 42 foot motorhome with the Mercedes engine that Freightliner uses in their medium haul trucks -- it too always starts immediately and it often sets for months at a time between starts.
