My father-in-law has an older X540, probably late 2000's. Used around the farm with some rough terrain. It's seen it's better days for sure. But he keeps up on maintenance thoroughly and if something breaks, it's replaced. Last year he broke 3 springs on the deck for the belt tensioner. He was mowing on Saturday and broke 2 in the same day. Any ideas why this keeps happening? That seems like a pretty odd piece to break 5 times in a very short period of time. It's a 54" edge deck.

Usually repeated failures are caused by a pto clutch that is engaging hard. Also could be caused by something jammed in a V pulley on the deck.
Drop the deck all the way down on a clean flat surface, have someone operate as you observe the belt action when engaged and running. Be careful!

I will definitely have him check that. It does get trailered down gravel roads so I suppose there could be something stuck in a pulley or something.
