Good morning,

I am new to tractors and new to the forum and hope to get some advice on a problem with an x585 with about 500 hours on it that I got used last year.

This winter the PTO engagement became erratic - the PTO engagement switch, RIO switch, and wiring seemed to check out OK. I replaced the PTO engagement solenoid and the problem was instantly fixed.

Now about 30 hours of use later, the PTO will not engage. The dash lights come on appropriately, and the engagement switch, wiring, and RIO switch all continue to check out ok. I have 12 volts at the solenoid wiring harness when the circuit is energized. When I take the PTO solenoid out and put 12 volts across it, the plunger does not move.

It seems awfully strange to have a new solenoid to fail so rapidly - I am wondering if the real problem is somewhere else in the system and this is causing the solenoid to fail. Does anybody have any experience or insight into this problem?

How does your hydro fluid look? Wondering if you have something gumming up the solenoid.

I also of the understanding that there are to coils in a solenoid. There is initial coil and a hold hold open coil. If the initial coil is staying on it could burn itself out.

Thank you - fluid is new and full. I ended up replacing the solenoid and the machine worked great yesterday.

I didn't know there were two parts to the solenoid - there are only two wires going to it, so I assumed that made a complete circuit, but perhaps both are power wires for two circuits and the ground is through the frame.

I'm still worried that there is an underlying problem that is causing the solenoid to go bad and that this might not last, so if anybody else has seen this or has a better understanding of the problem, that would be great.
