X748 PTO stops working while mowing

While mowing yesterday the pto would disengage repeatedly for no apparent reason. Would only re-engage after repeated attempts sometimes up to 20 tries. Never happened before. 2012 machine roughly 1000 hours bought used last year. Any troubleshooting ideas appreciated.

Engine overheating? What does the radiator screen look like?
Lots of other possibilities - an intermittent pto switch contact, and, if they had the same safety/rio system and they do today, maybe the reverse switch? A faulty seat switch would shut the machine down, but may also be worth a look.

My 455 has an overheat-triggered PTO shutdown. I'm pretty sure yours does too.

Check your radiator pre-screen.

Yeah overheating would be my first guess. Also check the reverse pedal safety switch, as well as brake safety. Those will all disengage the deck PTO.
Seat switch is another possibility.

When switch is 'opened' and quickly remade, the pto swill stops but engine keeps running.

Agree with other recommendations as first steps. If you get past those and are still having issues, check the connection on the temperature sender, and it’s resistance (ohms). I don’t have my manual in front of me but can confirm later.

My x748 was acting a few weeks ago and would kick off the mower randomly. Happened to son 3 who is my designated grass cutter. I checked everything (mentioned in above posts) and all was good. I cut with it and sure enough it happened again, but I noticed the temp gauge went from normal to pegged in a second. When I turned off PTO switch, it immediately went back to normal temp. I disconnected the sender and cleaned the connection and confirmed the ohms. It’s been working fine since so I am assuming it was the connection.

True dat.
Had the same problem! I had to replace the radiator.

I had a (new at the time) X740 that liked to collect debris on the side screens, the removable screen and the radiator. With pto off, and still at high idle, it would quickly cool enough for the warnings to disappear.

Idle down and give the screens a quick clean/wipe and it would be good to go for awhile.
It would get a full blowing off of rad and all screens between mowing sessions.
I didn’t think the outside screens were dirty so never considered temperature but after opening up realized inside screen was caked with grass and dust so strongly suspect that. Can’t believe it got that bad after only a few mows this spring. Will get back to cleaning every time I guess. Will know for sure around Wednesday when I mow again. Thanks.
My 445 did this too. Turned out to be the PTO switch (nice because it was pretty inexpensive). Mine was more problematic on hot sunny days. When the switch got warm, it did not work (PTO would shut off). Sometimes it only took 2-3 tries to restart, other times I had to wait for the tractor to cool off.
I carry a horsehair brush with me in one of my buckets. In a 5 acre park I may have to stop and clean all screens, pulling out the inner one also, perhaps four times. I always try to anticipate because I do not want it to get that hot. But as dry as we are, grass is cutting fine and I can go from 4 bars to kicking the PTO out before I can complete a round sometimes.
