1020 Power Steering Conversion

I recently converted my manual steering 1020 to power steering from burnt up tractor. I installed the power steering tower and hooked up the hydraulic lines, but when I drove the tractor I’d have excellent power steering but my three-point hitch would not work unless the steering was at full lock. So I have purchased a priority valve that goes under the right hand step. When I went to install the valve I noticed one of the smaller ports was blocked off on the case with what seems to be a ball bearing. Anyone who has done this conversion can give me any tips on how to remove the ball bearing or does it not need to be removed. Thank you

Drive in or drill ball! If it was my tractor I would leave ball in place & not install pressure control(priority) valve. Only time priority aids operation of power steering would be when 3 pt or other hyd valve is engaged(operated). PCV is designed to stop power steering valve from momentarily loosing hyd pressure & cause steering wheel to momentarily be difficult to turn.

That is "bleed" to the transmission case. It will use an O-ring between the PCV and transmission case. Bearing has to come out.

TxJim; Didn't these tractors have an engine mounted power steering pump (separate from the crank driven hydraulic pump) on early tractors? Then later tractors used a larger hydraulic pump and engine mounted pump went away.

Maybe he has too small of a front hydraulic pump?
Serial number would tell 010001 to 0145199 had an engine mounted PS pump in addition to a hydraulic pump.

Yes. I mainly use this tractor to mow our pasture. Raising the mower is a process. Which is why I need to priority valve. The ball that’s in the hole is harder than a coffin nail. So I’m gonna try and get some carbide burrs and cut that ball out. Because it will not move if I hit it.

Whomever told you priority valve gives 3 pt hitch priority hyd pressure needs to study a JD utilty tractor tech manual so as to discover they're spreading false information. 3pt hitch is supplied with hyd oil behind pressure control valve not in front of it such as power steering.
Priority valve gives power steering priority hyd pressure over all other hyd functions on JD utilty tractors built from '65-'92. Priority valve closes at 1700 psi but doesn't regulate system pressure which should be 2250 psi which is controlled by stroke control valve in frt hyd pump.
If you raise 3 pt while holding steering wheel steady(not turning a corner) you won't be able to determine if priority valve is present or absent.

Check for personal message on this site because I sent you a PM.

If your donor tractor had a separate power steering pump, or came off an open center tractor, (some 2040’s were open center), it will not work on your closed center tractor. Do you have model and serial number of tractor your parts came from? The pressure control valve will not solve the problem you are having. You either have an open center steering valve or there is a problem with valve such as blown orings
