Hey everyone I'm new here but not necessarily new to tractors. My grandfather bought this when it was almost new and has had it ever since. I learned to drive it when I was 6 and used it all time on his farm and enjoyed every minute of it ?. Fast forward over 20 years and he is now giving it to me! Bad thing is it's sat for at least 10 years but it SHOULDN'T (key word) need much, I know it needs a tank and radiator which is easy. Anyways my question is in regards to the weight of it. Like I said it's an 855 4WD with a #52 FEL, post hole digger and scraper and I've seen it posted that it's around 1,900 lbs but that seems really light?? I just wanna make sure my dad's 1 ton van with a 350 SBC can tow it. Also we'll have a double axle car trailer with us.

Thanks guys

John

John,

The JD Operator's Manual shows the operating weight of the 855 as 1,870#. The loader is probably another 250#, the PHD is maybe 200#. Not sure about the scraper blade. I believe you should be within the load rating of your trailer, if it is 3,000# rated. Check tire pressure on the trailer tires. Your father's van should be able to move it easily

Make sure you have proper straps to tie it down. With my 955, I strap it front and back around the cross tube of the loader frame.

As for maintenance, I would check the front axle pivot bushing. It becomes an easily overlooked grease point, as it is a PITA to get to. Don't ask how I know!

You know the machine.. Good luck with it!

One of my questions has always been what old model tractor would my 2038 be equivalent to? 900 series? Bigger?

A 1/2 ton pickup would handle the tractor perfectly fine. In my opinion a 1 ton is way overkill for the task which isn't a bad thing at all.

Even if the tires are loaded I would estimate your loaded weight will be under 3500#. Not sure what your trailer weighs, you mentioned it's a car hauler so I'm sure at minimum it has two 3500lbs axles. Your hauling a compact tractor and I'm betting it's far lighter than some people think simply because the word "tractor" is in the weight equation.

I kinda hope for you the tires are not loaded. If they are then due to the age of the tractor calcium chloride was most likely used, that stuff is really rough on rims.

That's awesome your getting the tractor. Especially being you have history with it. As a kid I'm sure you felt like you were a bad a$$ operating it at 6 years old, fast foward 20+ years and you will still have a lot of the same joys operating it..... Tractors are just cool like that.

Yea dad and I have towed dozens of cars, mostly with a 5.3 1/2T GMC, so nothing new towing but the weight seemed really low which is why I was asking to make sure. That 350 does ok but she's old ?. Also yea I forget why my dad bought a full ton as we never tow anything that heavy and the SBC is too enemic for a full ton but he hates it. Tows great though! Next year I'm getting a truck but I need to pay my Trans Am off ?. I'll post pics later I need to take a picture of a picture ?.

Also loaded tires? Do you mean the weighted ones? If so no but the rear rims are toast from many northern winter's.

Thanks for the info everyone I'll post some pics on a new starter thread if that's ok. Not sure when I can get the tractor but hopefully in a few weeks!

Well yes and no....not weights on the outside but fluid filled in the inside, would add about 800 lbs to tractor?
And I am guessing here....put valve stem at 6 o’clock and let a little air out, if fluid comes out then you know.
Will help in getting to a better total weight.

Ahh gotcha I highly doubt he ever did that and I believe the tires are split so nothing would be in there now lol. I will make a point to check. Still trying to find the original photo of me with that tractor, when I do I'll post them up along with the current photos I took a couple months ago.

How far are you going to move the tractor?:dunno:
Across the county, or across the state? That can make a difference.
If it is across the county, I know a roll back owner that should do it for about $45.
That might relieve your concerns.

Here is a pic of another 855 that lives near Roanoke VA,,,

I bought this one for my daughter,, she lives next door to me,

Not far I live about 15 miles from him. I was just second guessing the weight but if that's all it weighs even with the attachments then it'd be fine. I may have it delivered though as I started thinking about the trailer. It's a friends and I don't want to tear it up dragging it on the trailer since my dad just painted it. I really want to buy one but don't need the payment right now as I'm buying a house in the fall.
