I have a 4300 that seemed to be working fine. I picked up a small shed and backed up a little. I needed to raise the shed a little higher and the hydraulics would not lift. The steering became jerky. I had to lower and drop the shed to get the tractor back to the garage. About the time I reached the garage, the steering wouldn't turn. I checked the hydraulic fluid and it was above the sight glass. I put a vacuum on the fill port and removed the filter. There was almost no oil in the filter so I turned the vacuum off and there was no fluid coming out of the filter port. I put a new filter on and tried again. The hydraulics were slow and the steering noisy. They worked for a couple minutes and dropped off to almost nothing. I haven't found where the filter bypass is to check it, but confused as to why oil wasn't pouring out without the filter on.

The spin-on filter would be a high pressure filter on the output. The 4300 also has a suction screen on the sump. If that were clogged it could cause the system to starve for oil. Has that been cleaned recently?
It looks like the guy I bought it from had it out in November of last year. I would bet that I don't have 20 hours on it. He put RTV blue on the gasket.....or for a gasket.
We also seem to be having an epidemic of algae growth clogging the suction screens on these tractors. The symptoms you describe are consistent with suciton-side issues. Check your manifold, your filter, and your suction screen.
Main Spin on filter is suction side, between the suction screen and pumps. There is another spin-on on the hydrostat between the charge pump and the high-pressure pump, and potentially another cartridge-style filter on the rockshaft return line (not all got those)
