I know this has likely been covered multiple times but yah or nay to Oregon G5 gators for my X580 with 48” deck. I know I’ll just have to buy a set and try them to know for sure. But curious on real world experiences. I have mulchcontrol now not saying it’s bad but it’s not great either in my opinion. Maybe if you could mow twice a week but I can’t. I’d like to minimize clippings laying around and get a nice cut with a good amount of lift. The stock JD blades do a nice job but no mulching action at all, and don’t work well with mulchcontrol. I’m wondering if Gators might be a happy medium. Maybe just remove the mulchcontrol. Reviews online are generally positive, just curious for some additional feedback from other owners before I place the order

I’m running them on my 54” deck with good results. Chops things up pretty good but I still see a lot of discharge if the grass is thick. However I don’t have any mulching type kit installed.

I use them on my 590 with and without mulchcontrol. With they work fine and I do like the quality of cut better than the standard mulch blades as they lift the the grass up for a more even cut. Without mulchcontrol they will leave grass clippings but they are finer/smaller than the standard John deere blades. I will say this though, with mulchcontrol, because of the lift from the gators, you will have to clean the deck more often.

So if the grass was heavy say you’d open the mulch control baffle door and if it was lighter it works ok to leave the door closed with the gators? My issue with the standard mulch blades is that lack of lift and not great cut really. The other issue is spring when it’s heavy the mulch blades struggle then too. The gator g5 has been a good all around option then?

I run the G5 Gators on my 42-inch mower. No particular blade will do its best on variable lengths of grass and lawns; however, I have found that for an overall best use blade the G-5 gators work best for me. The lift is great, and the fine clippings are spread more evenly over the throw area. If the throw area is not to your liking, you may have to adjust the discharge baffle a bit.

Tried the gator g5 blades for the first time tonight. So far I am really impressed! Great even cut, good lift and stripes. Closed mulch control in areas where I don’t want clippings and it still worked good. Open areas, flip mulch control open and let the clippings fly. Still have clippings discharged but pretty fine and not really noticeable. Having used The stock blades, mulch blades and now these, the gators look to be a happy medium. I like the mulchcontrol in principle but seeing these in action I do t know if I would buy it again for my conditions. Good cut from the gators and minimal clippings left. Seriously the best cut I’ve had from my machine to date. When people say they are noisy they are not kidding. I Didn’t see any noticeable power loss etc with the heavy blades, I powered through tall grass better than ever. Usually I’m an OEM only type guy but so far this may be an exception, I’d say I’d recommend these pretty highly at this point.

OEM blades where in great condition. The original blades gave a nice cut but lots of long clippings and didn’t work great with mulchcontrol. The mulch blades did ok I guess but not the lift and cut I needed in my conditions. No complaints with either set of JD blades really. Just these gators may be a better overall fit for me and where/how I use them.

Im another OEM only guy who believes aftermarket is only acceptable if it's an upgrade. I have ran G5 Gator blades for 12 years and I won't buy anything else. Any mower blades when worn get replaced with G5 Gator blades. I have thought about the G6 but don't see the need to run a heavier blade than the G5.
