Stay away from the D110 lawn tractor

Very disappointed in John Deere for not backing their products. I have a d100 lawn tractor and it’s 6 months past the warranty. I have 33 hrs on the machine. It’s basically brand new. I was having issues with it moving forward so I brought it to my local small engine repair shop. He told me it’s a bad transmission. I had him replace it. I called John Deere and was informed that they needed to diagnose it as well as do all the work to it. And maybe they would help me out but couldn’t say a definitive answer on that. So I was supposed to have my guy pack it up and bring it to John Deere and take work away from him and get charged dealership rates to maybe have them pay for something. Regardless it was going to cost a lot more than my guy did it for. John Deere needs to do a better job standing behind their products. Especially in this situation where the machine had 33 hrs on it. Stay away

With just about any product if you want warranty work done you have to bring it to an authorized dealer/shop.

In your case, being out of warranty, it would be prudent to get a diagnosis from a dealer first. Once anyone else works on it the manufacturer is going to not be of any help.

I can sort of understand JD's point in wanting an authorized dealer to investigate potential warranty work. With only 33 hrs on the machine I have to believe they would have done something for you.

I am going to start by saying I mean no disrespect. I really don’t, just my opinion. You have a John Deere with 33 hours and a bad tranny. I understand you are upset, I would be too. Who wouldn’t? But if I’m understanding right, you had the work done BEFORE you contacted JD and you want them to reimburse you. You have to understand that JD can’t run a warranty program on the local town mechanics word. People would be ripping JD off left and right on warranty work that never happened. They have to look at the machine. You have to go to them first. You didn’t really give them a chance to stand behind their product.

The D110 is a metal trans (at least mine is so I assume all are)
When I got the machine, it had 42 hours on it and had the same issue of moving sluggishly going in both directions.....turns out that little rod at the back of the machine was partially out. Have 10 hours on it since and haven't had the issue yet.

But a word of advice when it comes to bringing your tractor (or anything else) to a mechanic. Never tell them what you think is exactly wrong with your machine. If you tell them you think the transmission is bad, guess what, the transmission is bad. Even if they can fix it with a $5 part or 5 minutes of time, you already set yourself up for a big $$$bill. Instead, just generalize your concerns and what you have noticed, and explain how to re-create the condition so they can diagnosis it properly.

Sadly, the few bad apples out there really do give mechanics a bad name. There are more good mechanics than bad, but the few bad ones really give the trade a serious black eye.

Hope there's no mechanics out there thinking I am targeting the entire industry because I'm not. But, Ive been doing it for 40 years and sadly, Ive seen this happen all too many times to not be objective about it. And no, I don't mean Ive been overcharging people for 40 years. LOL ....... I was an aircraft mechanic for 5+ years then a gov't fleet mechanic. Never went to a small shop but, I know too many people that do.

I agree. Old saying.. "Never ask a barber if ya need a hair cut." Lol.
Mechanics/technicians.. what ever we are refered to, we have to constantly try and reassure the customer that we are not going to rip them off. It's the one part of the job I hate. As a tech/mech.. there is NO Room for error. None. Unfortunately, we are still human.. contrary to popular belief. The new part we installed.. well it ain't for crap either. It failed in 1.1hr run time. Now ya come back and yur azz is on fire. Well.. mine too.
Things are designed by, built by, bought by and operated by and worked on by humans. Nuff said.
