Bought a 2038R this summer with a 60 inch snow blower and R3 tires. We have a 1/4 mile dirt (road base) driveway with a 12% pitch at one point near Winter Park Colorado. I can not get the tractor up the driveway in snow, even with all four wheels spinning, unless I plow it with my UTV first. I need a set of chains for the back tires. I like the idea of v-bar chains. I garage the tractor and like to help out a neighbor with his driveway. His driveway is paved with blacktop. Do I need v-bar chains? Really don't want to buy more than one set of chains at the prices they are asking on tirechain.com. Also do I need wheel spacers for chain clearance. Thank you

Take a look at Aqualine MPC Aquiline® Multi-Purpose Chains - MPC - Wallingfords
I did put 2" spacers on my 3520 last year but ran the chains for years before doing so. I just kept them skin tight with spring tensions. No worries and don't use the tensioners at all now. Spacers make it a lot easier to put the chains on too.
MPO. I think tire chains work a wee bit better if they have a little slack in them. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I had a similar situation with my 2720. Prior to the 2720 I had a Ford 9N with v-bar chains as I only used it on a gravel driveway. The v-bars are incredible for traction on snow and ice. However, when I got the 2720 I planned to clean my gravel driveway and two other paved driveways so I went with standard 2-link chains from Tirechain.com. Based on my experience with the v-bars I would not recommend them for use on paved surfaces. If for any reason you end up spinning a tire even the slightest you will seriously gouge the pavement.

On my 2720 I had no chain clearance issues on the rear but for the front I purchased the OEM JD wheel spacers as there was just no clearance between the tire and the tie rod ends. Which is probably why JD offered the spacers in the first place. I believe JD only had these for the Gen-1 2-series. I'm not sure what clearances you have on the 2038R.

You might want to consider chains for the front as well. I have them on all four tires on my 2720 because whenever I lift the 54-inch front blower off the ground it unweights the "loaded" rear tires enough that I get wheel spin. I find in most of my snow blowing and plowing with a rear blade the front tires are providing the majority of the traction.

I still think back and chuckle when I bought the 2720 as the dealer told me with 4WD I would not ever need chains. HAH... I learned that was false the first winter. :)

🤣 🤣 luckily already knew my dealer was full of crap when they said the same thing.
I would also bet the correct chains for @Fraserco would be the standard 2-link ladder chains.
Another good place to purchase from...Home Page

V bar chains are great for anything but blacktop and concrete. They Can damage it quite easily

V-bars are awesome and make the tractor nearly unstoppable. But as others have said, they will damage hard surfaces. You said your drive is "road base" which I assume is some sort of gravel, and not ashpalt? If any of your area to be cleared is paved or concrete, I would not get v-bars. That said, I still keep my tractor in a garage with concrete floors using horse stall mats to protect the floor. I cut them in half and lay down a strip for each wheel track.

I just recently bought the aquiline mpc for my 2720 was going to put 1.5 inch spacers on but it would interfere with back wheels of my 62-mower deck. so i pulled off my mower deck lift linkage they fit fine they are a little large but that because my r4s are half gone. As for damage concrete the bars will also take the finish off but not like the v bars style. I use old cow mat spilt in two I have about 12 inches in front of garage door that's not protected, and I can see several marks where the finish is off
