Do most of you use RV antifreeze for this? Was researching and found a lot of guys saying the pink RV stuff will dry out your seals in your pto pump. Said to use automotive antifreeze. Seems to be a hot topic for argument. I figure we do great with those topics!😉

What say you???

I run compressed air through my lines and pump, not a great deal of pressure, I think the pressure gauge on the pump usually will show 30 to 40 pounds of pressure while its blowing.......I have done this for years and so far, so good.

Start by pulling the pick up line out of the fill hole in the top of the tank, unscrew the screen on the end of the rubber pick up line and then run the air pressure through the pick up line to clear the spray nozzles on the back of the frame. Then, turn the control valve and make sure the spray hose valve is opened and continue.

After all, if I am trusting my 16 zone lawn irrigation system with 148 spray heads and over 6,000 feet of poly pipe to being winterized with compressed air, the same should be adequate for my 45 gallon sprayer tank......and it always has been so far......(for both the irrigation and the sprayer)...........

Yes, use the pink stuff , the the pink RV AF has not dried out any of the seals in any of my sprayers.

I say it's Mid August......and even our friends in the Great White North aren't getting freezing temps.....yet.....

What's next, Oil types?
Petroleum Additives?:mad::mad:
Grapples weights and capacities? :mad:o_O:mad:

Heck, lets just dive right into "Political and Religious Topics" as well........and throw in Gender and Race....:mad:o_O:mad:o_O:mad:o_Oo_O:mad::mad:

On the other hand, I stand with my earlier answer......Compressed air and I pass on the other topics...for now. ;) o_O

Man, I wish antifreeze had different weights. We could argue for months!

I vote for RV antifreeze. Do the seals in rv pumps and faucets deteriorate with the pink stuff? No.
I typically rinse the sprayer out with soapy water and then run RV antifreeze through it when ever I use it. I’ve been known to “forget” about winterizing things until a cold night in October when I’m in the barn at 10pm draining water out something.

Nothing like that EVER happens to me.😉

RV antifreeze is all I’ve ever used in my tank sprayer. I think the concept of damaging seals is wrong and would ignore that advice. I just empty mine, refill with a gallon of RV antifreeze and run it through the pump for a minute of two. Nothing more elaborate than that is required.

My boat dealer “pickles” my inboard ski boat, completely filling the entire system with RV antifreeze. Lots of seals in that system, especially the impeller on the raw water pump. I haven’t had to replace that impeller in years.

We run the engine using "muffs" supplied by -50F RV antifreeze.
We'll go through a couple thousand gallons of the stuff.

That’s what I was after, real experience. Thanks, guys. RV it will be.

I suggest when winterizing, pull the spark plug.
Give a good squirt of oil in the plug hole. Cycle the engine
Leave the spark plug OUT, and cover with a rag over winter.
At the start of the next season, cycle the engine a few times, install the plug.
The reason I do this, fuel seepage into the cylinder, caused compression lock and cracked the cylinder bore.
At that point the engine was worthless

We’ve always used RV antifreeze too, never had any problems.

Do the guys (so-called experts) who complain about seals being damaged realize RV AF is made with Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) ?

This type of glycol uses polymers which actually lubricate pumps and seals.

On Edit: I meant to type Propylene Glycol not Polypropylene Glycol...which is bad juju

Actually, PEG (automotive antifreeze) is quite toxic and environmentally unfriendly. It will kill you and your dogs if they accidentally lap some up (so be careful where you spill it or drain it). RV antifreeze is proplyene glycol. It's low toxicity and environmentally friendly, and has the added advantage of containing lubricants designed to keep plumbing seals pliable and intact.

I use whatever anti freeze I have on hand. RV anti freeze is my first choice. But I have used regular automotive anti freeze. Just got to keep the dog away from it, if you use anything toxic.

Last year when winterizing the pump I failed to purchase the RV Antifreeze as I should have. Grabbed the low temp windshield washer fluid sitting on the shelf and used it. It seemed to work.
