cheap and easy drawbar stabilizer

I wanted a way to keep the hitch ball facing up so I can easily move trailers around. I just heated and bent up a 4' piece of 1/2" rebar to catch the top hook on the quick hitch. I may cut off the bottom pieces that I bent under and drill and pin them instead. I didn't think of doing that until just now.

Nice, Simple, solution!!

Brilliant! That could be almost $2 worth of rebar. Probably the cheapest commercial solution is a drawbar lock for about $20, or 10 times as much.

This is genius! Does it just stay on the drawbar permanently then?

Thanks! The way it is now, yes. If I cut off those lower bends and drill a hole for a cotter pin on each side it would then be removable.

Or just build a receiver hitch that fits the QH. That would be a pain for me. I use my QH for other things. Besides that I think as soon as I pulled off with my trailer it would roll that rebar.

The rebar is just there to keep the drawbar from flipping upside down from the weight of the hitch ball. There is some play in the holes that the rebar runs through and the coupler on the trailer only let's the ball move so much in my experience so far.

I did the same thing with some threaded rod with some nuts/washers. It did work well for a while but then I managed to bend it when moving my dump trailer while it was loaded. I ended up buying a drawbar stabilizer.

Yeah I should say this is for light duty trailer moving, mainly while I'm mowing or for pulling a log splitter or pulling my 4x8 trailer around while doing yard work. I wouldn't pull a heavily loaded trailer with it (well I say that but I would probably try just to see what happens lol). I'm planning on building a 3 point receiver hitch when I finish getting the materials around but didn't have a way to pull anything in the meantime. I was planning on buying one but the prices have gone much too high for me.

As long as you keep it to light use it'll hold up for a long time. I got stupid and didn't think about the weight. The trailer was tongue heavy and as I pulled it, the ball started sliding around and it twisted the drawbar by bending the threaded rod. Eventually the threaded rod just gave out. It's one of those things that will last you a lifetime if ya use it right but one wrong use ends it in a hurry. 🤣

I'm thinking of making something similar to that but I'm hesitant to cut up the 3/4 ton square body Chevy truck hitch i have to do it.

Here’s a reasonable place to start!

I was just looking at the TS website!

I got the tractor supply one also. Works fine but only fits with the quick hitch removed. I am thinking about extending it to reach with the iMatch on.

Forgot to mention , I had to do the same thing. If I think of it next time I'm on the tractor I'll post what I did to make it work.

Hopefully this evening or tomorrow...

Ok remembered to take phone with me.

This is what I came up with so I could use it with the quick hitch.

I had planned on measuring the distance where I cut the factory piece into. This took maybe 20 minutes for me to cut it into , then find a piece of metal to use between the two pieces.
If you look close at the photos , the added length looks about the width of the quick hitch.

How do you remove the support bracket when you want to remove the drawbar?
